Our skin is our first line of defense against the environment, but sometimes we forget to take care of it properly. Here are some common habits we should avoid to keep our skin healthy and glowing.

1. Sun Exposure without Protection

The sun’s rays can cause significant damage to the skin. In addition to premature aging, sun exposure can lead to skin cancer. Always use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 and wear protective clothing when going out in the sun.

Avoid peak hours between 10 am and 2 pm when the sun’s rays are the strongest.

2. Smoking

Smoking damages not only your heart and lungs, but also your skin. It reduces blood flow and robs your skin of essential nutrients and oxygen. Smoking can also cause wrinkles and age your skin prematurely.

Quit smoking to improve your skin’s health and appearance.

3. Not Keeping Skin Hydrated

Dehydrated skin looks dull and aged. Drinking enough water is a simple and effective way to keep your skin hydrated. However, you shouldn’t forget to moisturize your skin as well.

Use hydrating moisturizers to lock in moisture and keep your skin looking plump and youthful.

4. Sleeping with Makeup On

Makeup clogs your pores and prevents your skin from breathing. Sleeping with your makeup on can lead to breakouts and other skin irritations. Always remove your makeup before going to bed.

Use a gentle cleanser to remove all traces of makeup and grime from your skin and then moisturize.

5. Over-washing or Self-Exfoliating

Washing your face and exfoliating your skin too often can strip away the skin’s natural oils and leave it dry and irritated. This can lead to inflammation, breakouts, and other skin issues.

Limit face washing to twice a day and exfoliate no more than once a week. Use gentle exfoliating products to avoid damaging your skin.

6. Using Products that Don’t Suit Your Skin Type

It’s important to use skincare products that are suitable for your skin type. Using the wrong products can lead to skin issues like irritation, dryness, and breakouts.

Consult with a dermatologist to determine your skin type and find products that work best for you. Remember, not all expensive brands will necessarily be better for your skin.

7. Stressing Over Your Skin

Stress can wreak havoc on your skin. It triggers the release of cortisol, which can cause inflammation and breakouts. Don’t stress too much about your skin.

Instead, adopt healthy habits like regular exercise, meditation, and adequate sleep to reduce stress and build resilience in your skin.

8. Neglecting to Wear Eye Protection

The skin around your eyes is delicate and prone to wrinkles and sun damage. Always protect your eyes from the sun’s rays by wearing sunglasses or a hat with a wide brim.

Also, avoid looking at screens for long hours as it can strain your eyes and cause damage to the skin around them.

9. Following Unhealthy Dietary Habits

Your skin is a reflection of your overall health. Eating a diet high in sugar, processed foods, and unhealthy fats can lead to skin issues like acne and premature aging.

On the other hand, eating a balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables, healthy fats, and proteins can keep your skin healthy and glowing. Consider consulting with a dietician to design a meal plan that suits your skin’s needs.

10. Skipping Regular Dermatologist Checkups

Regular checkups with a dermatologist are important for maintaining your skin’s health. Skin cancer, for example, is one of the most common forms of cancer, but it’s also highly treatable. Early detection is key.

Your dermatologist can also advise you on skincare products and treatments that are best suited for you.
