Preparing your skin for a waxing session

Learn how to prepare your skin for a waxing session with these essential tips. Follow these steps to ensure a smooth and comfortable experience

Waxing is a popular method of hair removal, as it provides longer-lasting results compared to shaving or using hair removal creams. However, for a successful waxing session, it is crucial to properly prepare your skin beforehand.

By following these steps, you can ensure a smoother and more comfortable waxing experience.

1. Exfoliate your skin

Before your waxing appointment, it is essential to exfoliate your skin. Exfoliation removes dead skin cells, allowing the wax to adhere to the hair and not to the surface of the skin.

Use a gentle scrub or exfoliating mitt to lightly scrub the waxing area. Avoid exfoliating too vigorously, as this can irritate the skin.

2. Avoid sun exposure or tanning

Prolonged sun exposure or tanning can make your skin more sensitive and prone to irritation during waxing. It is recommended to avoid direct sun exposure and tanning beds for at least 48 hours prior to your waxing session.

If your skin is sunburned or has a recent tan, wait until it has fully healed before getting waxed.

3. Trim your hair if necessary

If your hair is too long, it is advisable to trim it to about a quarter of an inch before your waxing session. Long hair can be more painful to remove, and it increases the likelihood of the wax sticking to the skin rather than the hair.

However, avoid trimming the hair too short, as the wax may not be able to grip it properly.

4. Cleanse your skin

Ensure that the waxing area is clean and free from any lotions, oils, or sweat. Use a gentle cleanser to wash the area thoroughly, removing any dirt or residue that may interfere with the waxing process.

Pat the skin dry with a clean towel and avoid applying any products afterward which could create a barrier between the wax and the hair.

5. Avoid using skincare products with active ingredients

Prior to your waxing session, abstain from using any skincare products that contain active ingredients, such as retinoids, AHAs, or BHAs. These ingredients can make the skin more sensitive and prone to irritation or even burning during waxing.

Consult with your esthetician for specific recommendations on what products to avoid.

6. Take a pain reliever if necessary

If you have a low pain tolerance or are particularly sensitive to waxing discomfort, consider taking an over-the-counter pain reliever, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, about 30 minutes before your appointment.

This can help minimize any discomfort experienced during the waxing process.

7. Moisturize your skin

While it is important to remove any barriers between the wax and the hair, it is equally crucial to keep your skin well-moisturized in the days leading up to your appointment. Hydrated skin is more elastic and less prone to irritation.

However, ensure that you moisturize your skin at least 24 hours before the waxing session to avoid any product residue interfering with the wax.

8. Wear loose and comfortable clothing

On the day of your waxing appointment, it is advisable to wear loose and comfortable clothing to avoid any friction or irritation on the waxed area. Tight clothing can rub against the skin, causing redness or ingrown hairs.

Opt for breathable fabrics to keep your skin cool and comfortable after the waxing session.

9. Inform your esthetician about any allergies or medications

If you have any known allergies, such as latex or certain ingredients commonly found in wax, inform your esthetician before the session. This will allow them to choose the most suitable type of wax for your skin.

Additionally, if you are taking any medications that may affect your skin’s sensitivity, it is crucial to disclose this information to your esthetician.

10. Relax and breathe

Lastly, remember to relax and take deep breaths during your waxing session. Tension and anxiety can make the process more uncomfortable. Trust your esthetician and the techniques they use.

Before you know it, the waxing will be complete, and you’ll be left with smooth, hair-free skin!.
