As the temperatures drop and the holiday season approaches, it’s natural to crave thick and hearty meals that warm our insides.

But when is the right time to indulge in these types of foods? We asked nutritionists, chefs, and food bloggers for their input and here’s what they had to say:.

1. Breakfast

While many of us may associate thick foods with lunch or dinner, there’s no reason why they can’t make an appearance at breakfast.

“Thick and hearty breakfasts can be a great way to start the day, especially during the colder months,” says registered dietitian nutritionist, Laura Burak. “Options like oatmeal, quinoa bowls, or breakfast burritos can fill you up and provide sustained energy throughout the morning.”.

2. Lunch

When it comes to lunch, thick soups, stews, and chilis are a go-to for many people.

But is this the optimal time of day to indulge in them? “It really depends on the individual and their activity level,” says chef and food blogger, Jessica Formicola. “If you have a physically demanding job or plan to work out in the afternoon, a thicker lunch can be a good way to fuel your body. But if you’re sedentary for most of the day, a lighter lunch may be a better option.”.

3. Dinner

Thick, hearty dinners are a staple during the colder months. “There’s something very comforting about sitting down to a warm bowl of chili or a plate of lasagna on a chilly evening,” says Formicola.

“But it’s important to keep portions in mind and balance out your meal with plenty of vegetables.”.

4. Post-Workout

If you’re looking for a filling and satisfying post-workout meal, consider a thick smoothie or protein shake.

“Adding oats, nut butter, and frozen fruit to a protein powder base can create a thick and creamy shake that will help replenish energy stores,” says Burak. “Just be sure to keep an eye on the calorie and sugar content.”.

5. Snacks

Thick snacks like hummus, guacamole, and bean dip can be a great way to curb hunger between meals. “These types of snacks are not only filling, but they also provide a good amount of protein and healthy fats,” says Burak.

“Just be sure to pair them with vegetables or whole grain crackers to balance out your snack.”.

6. Desserts

Thick and indulgent desserts like chocolate mousse or bread pudding can be an incredibly satisfying way to end a meal. “I think it’s totally fine to indulge in these types of desserts every once in a while,” says Formicola.

“Just be mindful of the portion size and how often you’re consuming them.”.

7. Occasions

Special occasions like holidays or birthdays are a common time to indulge in thicker foods. “It’s perfectly okay to enjoy these types of meals on occasion,” says Burak.

“Just be sure to balance out the rest of your day and not make it an everyday habit.”.

The optimal time to indulge in thicker foods can also depend on your current climate and mood. “If it’s cold and dreary outside, a warm and hearty meal can really lift your spirits,” says Formicola.

“And if you’re feeling down or stressed, sometimes a decadent dessert or comfort food can be a way to boost your mood.”.

For some cultures, thicker and heartier meals are a regular part of their cuisine. “It’s important to take into account cultural factors when it comes to food choices,” says Burak.

“If a certain type of food is part of your cultural heritage, it can be incredibly satisfying to indulge in it on occasion.”.

At the end of the day, the optimal time to indulge in thicker foods is all about balance and moderation.

“It’s perfectly fine to enjoy these types of meals and snacks, as long as they’re part of an overall balanced diet,” says Burak. “Just be mindful of portion sizes and frequency.”.
