Dementia can also occur in childhood. Here are some of the warning signs that parents should be aware of

Dementia is a term used to describe a range of conditions that impact memory, cognitive ability, and behavior. While dementia is typically associated with aging, it can also occur in childhood. Here are some warning signs that parents should be aware of:.

1. Difficulty with language and communication

Children with dementia may struggle to express themselves or understand what others are saying. They may have trouble finding the right words or using proper grammar. Additionally, their speech may become slurred or difficult to understand.

2. Changes in personality or behavior

Children with dementia may display sudden and uncharacteristic changes in their behavior and personality. Agitation, aggression and apathy are common symptoms. They may also become withdrawn or disinterested in activities that they previously enjoyed.

They may experience delusions, hallucinations, and in some cases, may develop a distrust of others.

3. Memory problems

Children who have dementia may have issues with their memory. They might forget important events, such as birthdays, or have trouble recalling things from recent experiences.

4. Difficulty with motor skills

Due to the degenerative nature of some forms of dementia, children may experience difficulty with coordination, balance, and muscle control.

5. Difficulty with self-care

Children with dementia may forget how to perform basic self-care tasks, such as brushing their teeth, bathing themselves, or getting dressed.

Children with early-onset dementia may start struggling academically, as it impacts a lot of their cognitive abilities. They may have poor concentration, struggle to remember information, and display difficulty solving problems.

7. Social withdrawal

Children with dementia may withdraw from their friends and family, showing little interest in socializing. This can lead to a sense of isolation and can also impact their emotional well-being.

8. Vision issues

As dementia progresses in childhood, children may experience issues with their vision. They may struggle to recognize familiar people, places, and objects, which can lead to disorientation.

9. Lack of judgment or self-awareness

Children with dementia may display a lack of judgment or self-awareness. They may behave impulsively, making decisions that are not in their best interests or that are dangerous.

10. Changing physical abilities

As dementia progresses, children may experience a decline in their physical abilities. This can include loss of muscle control, decreased mobility, and a decline in overall health.

Recognizing the warning signs of dementia in childhood is challenging, but by being aware of the symptoms, parents can intervene and get the appropriate treatment and support for their child.

Early diagnosis and intervention can greatly improve long-term outcomes.
