Babies are born with limited motor skills. As they grow, it’s important to engage in exercises that can help improve their motor skills. Motor skills involve the use of muscles in the body that enable us to move and perform different tasks.
Here are ten simple and easy exercises that can help you to improve your baby’s motor skills and help them to develop strength, coordination, and balance.
1. Tummy Time
Place your baby on their tummy for a few minutes each day to help develop their neck, arm, and back muscles. It can also help prevent the development of a flat head. Encourage your baby to lift their head by placing toys just out of reach.
Gradually increase the amount of time your baby spends on their tummy as they get stronger.
2. Crawl Time
Encourage your baby to crawl by placing toys at different distances from them. This can help develop their arm, leg, and core muscles as well as their coordination.
If your baby can’t crawl yet, you can hold them in a crawling position and move them back and forth.
3. Reach and Grasp
Encourage your baby to reach and grab objects by placing toys just out of reach. This can help develop their arm and hand muscles as well as their coordination. You can also give your baby different textured toys to explore.
4. Push and Pull
Place toys that your baby can push and pull, like a wagon or a toy vacuum. This can help develop their arm, leg, and core muscles. The motion of pushing and pulling can also help to develop their balance.
5. Roll Over
Encourage your baby to roll over by gently guiding them. This can help develop their neck, arm, and back muscles as well as their coordination. You can also place toys beside them and encourage them to reach for them.
6. Rocking Motion
Rocking your baby back and forth or side to side can help improve their balance and coordination. You can also place them in a rocker or a swing for short periods of time.
7. Water Play
Place your baby in a bathtub or a baby pool and let them splash around. This can help develop their arm and leg muscles as well as their coordination. You can also place toys in the water for them to grab and explore.
8. Dancing
Dancing with your baby can help improve their balance and coordination. Hold your baby facing you and move to the beat of music. You can also play music while your baby is on their tummy or during tummy time.
9. Balloon Play
Blow up a balloon and let your baby bat it around. This can help develop their hand-eye coordination as well as their arm and hand muscles. You can also blow up multiple balloons and encourage your baby to keep them in the air.
10. Massage
Massaging your baby’s muscles can help improve their blood flow and muscle tone. Use gentle pressure and circular motions to massage your baby’s arms, legs, and back. This can also help to soothe your baby.
