Summertime is all about fun in the sun, but it’s also important to remember to take care of your dental health during this season. The Attica Dental Association has put together a list of 10 must-dos for maintaining a healthy smile this summer.
1. Stay Hydrated
Drinking plenty of water is essential during the summer months, both for overall health and dental health. Staying hydrated helps to prevent dry mouth, which can lead to tooth decay and other oral health problems.
2. Wear a Mouthguard
Summer is a great time for outdoor sports and activities, but it’s important to protect your teeth while you’re active. Wearing a mouthguard can prevent dental injuries caused by impact or falls.
3. Don’t Use Teeth as Tools
It can be tempting to use your teeth to open bottles or packaging, but this can lead to chipped or broken teeth. Always use the appropriate tools to avoid dental damage.
4. Limit Sugary Drinks and Snacks
Ice cream, soda, and other sugary treats are a summer staple, but overindulging in these snacks can lead to tooth decay. Try to limit sugary drinks and snacks, and opt for water and fresh fruits instead.
5. Schedule a Dental Visit
Summer is a great time to schedule a dental check-up and cleaning. This can help prevent dental issues before they become serious and keep your smile healthy all year long.
6. Brush and Floss Regularly
Even when your schedule is packed with summer activities, it’s important to maintain a regular dental hygiene routine. Brush twice a day and floss once a day to keep your teeth clean and healthy.
7. Avoid Chewing Ice
Chewing on ice cubes can cause cracked or chipped teeth. If you need a cool summer treat, try frozen fruit or yogurt instead.
8. Use Sun Protection
Your lips are just as susceptible to sunburn as your skin – and sunburned lips can be painful and increase your risk of oral cancer. Use a lip balm with SPF to protect your lips from the sun.
9. Replace Your Toothbrush
It’s important to replace your toothbrush every three to four months, or more frequently if the bristles are frayed or worn. A fresh toothbrush can better remove plaque and protect your dental health.
10. Seek Emergency Dental Care if Needed
If you experience a dental emergency, such as a knocked-out tooth or severe tooth pain, don’t wait until after summer to seek treatment. Contact your dentist immediately for prompt care and to prevent further damage.
