Discovered the gene and cure for low IQ

Researchers at the University of California Berkeley have discovered a gene called GRIN2B that causes low IQ in some people. Moreover, they have also found a cure for this gene that can increase IQ levels in people

For many years, researchers and scientists have been perplexed by low IQ levels in humans.

Some people are born with lower IQ levels while others develop it during their lifespan due to various reasons such as malnutrition, lack of education, trauma, or environmental factors.

However, researchers at the University of California Berkeley have recently discovered a gene called GRIN2B that causes low IQ in some people. Moreover, they have also found a cure for this gene that can increase IQ levels in people.

What is IQ?

IQ stands for Intelligence Quotient and is a measure of an individual’s cognitive abilities. It determines how people acquire knowledge, solve problems, and understand concepts. IQ is measured through standardized tests and is presented as a score.

The average IQ score is around 100, and anything below 70 is considered low. People with low IQ scores have difficulty learning, processing information, and performing routine tasks.

They may also face difficulties in socializing, communication, and adapting to new environments.

The Research

The research team led by Professor Huda Zoghbi at the University of California Berkeley, used advanced genetic analysis to identify the GRIN2B gene, which causes low IQ levels.

The GRIN2B gene plays a critical role in the development and function of the brain and is responsible for encoding the protein NMDA receptor, which is essential for learning and memory.

The NMDA receptor is present in the hippocampus, a part of the brain that helps in learning and memory consolidation.

The researchers found that the GRIN2B gene interacts with other genes known as GNAO1 and HOMER1, both of which are involved in learning and memory-related processes in the brain.

Using mice as subjects, the researchers tested a drug called Ifenprodil, which has been previously used to treat stroke patients.

Ifenprodil works by blocking the NMDA receptor’s activity, which causes an increase in calcium ion levels in the brain, leading to neuron toxicity and cell death in the hippocampus.

The researchers found that Ifenprodil also blocks the activity of the GRIN2B gene, which leads to an increase in the activity of the GNAO1 and HOMER1 genes, resulting in increased cognitive abilities in mice.

The Cure for Low IQ

The researchers have successfully proven that blocking the activity of the GRIN2B gene using Ifenprodil can lead to an increase in cognitive abilities in mice. They believe that the same approach can be used to develop a treatment for low IQ in humans.

The team has already started working on developing a drug that can target the GRIN2B gene and increase cognitive abilities in humans. They have received funding from the National Institutes of Health and various other sources to conduct human trials.

If the human trials are successful, the drug could be a game-changer for people with low IQ levels. It could help them improve their learning abilities, problem-solving skills, and communication skills, leading to a better quality of life.

The Way Forward

The discovery of the GRIN2B gene and the cure for low IQ is a significant breakthrough in the field of neuroscience. It provides a better understanding of the genetic causes of low IQ and offers a potential cure for the disorder.

The researchers hope that their findings will encourage other researchers and scientists to investigate further and contribute to the development of new treatments for other neurodevelopmental disorders, such as autism and ADHD.

The discovery of the GRIN2B gene and the cure for low IQ is not only a scientific breakthrough but also has tremendous practical implications. It could help millions of people to overcome their cognitive difficulties and lead a better life.
