September 15th marks Global Bone Marrow Donor Appreciation Day, a day to honor and thank the individuals who donate their bone marrow to save the lives of others.
This day is especially meaningful for patients who have received a bone marrow transplant and have been given a second chance at life. Here, we share some of their stories of healing and hope.
Emily’s Story: A Life Saved by a Stranger
Emily was just 23 years old when she was diagnosed with leukemia. Chemotherapy was not enough to cure the cancer, and her only hope for survival was a bone marrow transplant.
Emily did not have any siblings who could be a match, so she had to rely on a stranger to save her life. Luckily, a donor was found through the bone marrow registry, and Emily received the transplant.
After her transplant, Emily had to stay in a hospital room for several weeks while her body adjusted to the new marrow. The process was difficult, but Emily never lost hope.

“Without him, I don’t know where I would be today.”.
Today, George is a healthy and happy adult, and he and his brother have a special bond that can never be broken. “My brother’s gift has given me a second chance at life, and I will always be grateful to him,” George said.
Lisa’s Story: A Selfless Act of Love
Lisa was diagnosed with leukemia when she was just 27 years old. Her family members were tested to see if they were a match for a bone marrow transplant, but none of them were a match.
Lisa’s parents decided to join the bone marrow registry in the hopes of finding a match, and they were thrilled when a donor was found.
