As the due date approaches, expectant mothers often begin to eagerly anticipate the signs that labor is imminent. While every woman’s experience is different, there are several common indications that labor is near.
From changes in the body to emotional and behavioral cues, these signs can help determine when the baby’s arrival is just around the corner.
1. Lightening
One of the earliest signs that labor is approaching is known as “lightening.” This occurs when the baby drops lower into the pelvis, relieving pressure on the diaphragm and allowing the mother to breathe more easily.
As a result, the shape of the belly may change, with the bump appearing lower and closer to the pelvis.
2. Increased Braxton Hicks Contractions
Braxton Hicks contractions are practice contractions that are often felt throughout pregnancy. However, as labor nears, these contractions tend to become more frequent and intense.
They can often be mistaken for true labor contractions, but they typically do not progress in intensity or regularity.
3. Bloody Show
A “bloody show” refers to the discharge of a small amount of blood or blood-tinged mucus from the cervix. This is typically a sign that the cervix is beginning to dilate and thin out in preparation for labor.
It may be accompanied by mild cramping or discomfort.
4. Nesting Instinct
Many expectant mothers experience a sudden burst of energy and an overwhelming desire to clean and organize their surroundings.
This “nesting instinct” is believed to be nature’s way of preparing the home and environment for the arrival of the baby. If you find yourself with an uncontrollable urge to declutter and scrub the floors, labor may be just around the corner.
5. Backache and Pelvic Pressure
As the baby descends into the pelvis, increased pressure on the lower back and pelvis can lead to discomfort and backaches. This can occur gradually or suddenly, and may also be accompanied by a sensation of pelvic heaviness or pressure.
6. Diarrhea and Upset Stomach
The body’s natural response to impending labor is to clear out the digestive system. This can result in loose stools or diarrhea.
Hormonal changes and the release of prostaglandins can cause the intestinal muscles to become more relaxed, leading to an upset stomach.
7. Burst of Creativity
Some women experience a surge of creativity and inspiration shortly before going into labor. This may manifest in various ways, such as feeling the urge to paint, write, or engage in artistic activities.
The increase in hormones and adrenaline can stimulate the brain and lead to these bursts of creative energy.
8. Loss of Mucus Plug
The mucus plug, which seals off the cervix during pregnancy to prevent infection, may be expelled as labor nears. This can happen in one piece or gradually over time, and is often accompanied by increased vaginal discharge.
The loss of the mucus plug is a positive indication that the cervix is beginning to soften and dilate.
9. Increased Pelvic Discomfort
As the body prepares for labor, the ligaments and joints in the pelvis begin to loosen and stretch. This can cause increased pelvic discomfort or pain, especially when walking or changing positions.
This discomfort can range from mild to severe and is often a result of the baby’s head pressing on the pelvis.
10. Intuitive Sense
Many women report having a strong intuition or “gut feeling” that labor is near. This may be accompanied by a sense of restlessness, unease, or a feeling of anticipation.
Trusting your instincts can often be a reliable indicator that your body is preparing for birth.
