As a parent, the last thing you want is for your child to get sick and miss out on valuable time at school. Kindergarten can be a breeding ground for germs and viruses, but there are ways to prevent sickness and keep your child healthy.

Here are some tips for parents:.

Teach Proper Handwashing

One of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of illness is to wash your hands regularly. Teach your child to wash their hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially before eating or after using the bathroom.

If soap and water are not available, hand sanitizer is a great alternative.

Keep Your Child Home When They’re Sick

It may be tempting to send your child to school even if they’re not feeling well, but this can spread illness to other children and teachers. If your child has a fever, cough, runny nose, or other symptoms, keep them home until they’re feeling better.

Cover Your Mouth and Nose

Coughing and sneezing can spread germs quickly. Teach your child to cover their mouth and nose with a tissue or their elbow when they cough or sneeze, and then wash their hands to prevent spreading germs.

Practice Good Nutrition

A healthy diet can boost your child’s immune system and help prevent illness. Encourage your child to eat a variety of fruits and vegetables, lean protein, and whole grains. Avoid sugary snacks and drinks, as they can weaken the immune system.

Get Plenty of Sleep

A good night’s sleep can help boost the immune system and prevent illness. Make sure your child gets plenty of sleep each night, and establish a regular bedtime routine to promote healthy sleep habits.

Clean and Disinfect Surfaces

The surfaces that your child comes into contact with at school can be a breeding ground for germs. Make sure to clean and disinfect high-touch surfaces at home, such as doorknobs, light switches, and countertops.

Stay Up-to-Date on Immunizations

Immunizations can prevent serious illnesses such as measles, mumps, and whooping cough. Make sure your child is up-to-date on all recommended immunizations, and talk to your healthcare provider about any questions or concerns you may have.

Encourage Physical Activity

Regular physical activity can help boost the immune system and prevent illness. Encourage your child to participate in outdoor activities and sports, and limit screen time to promote healthy habits.

Go to the Doctor Regularly

Regular checkups with your child’s healthcare provider can help catch and prevent illnesses before they become serious. Make sure to schedule regular appointments for your child, and discuss any concerns you may have with their healthcare provider.

Stay Informed

Stay up-to-date on any illness outbreaks or school policies regarding illness. If your child’s school has a sick policy, make sure you understand the guidelines and follow them to prevent the spread of illness.
