Quick Health Tests to Try on Yourself This Week

10 quick and simple health tests you can try at home to check your body and mind. From BMI calculation to vision and oral health check

It’s always important to be aware of our health and potential issues that may arise. However, busy schedules and the costs of medical examinations can often deter us from taking the necessary steps to maintain our well-being.

The good news is, there are simple and effective ways to test your health at home. Here are ten quick health tests you can try on yourself this week:.

Body Mass Index (BMI) Calculation

BMI is a measure of body fat based on height and weight. It’s an easy way to estimate if you are underweight, overweight, or at a healthy weight.

To measure it, you need to calculate your weight in kilograms and height in meters, then divide your weight by the square of your height. A healthy BMI is between 18.5 and 24.9.

Blood Sugar Test

Checking your blood sugar levels can help detect type 2 diabetes early on. You can do this by using a blood glucose meter, which is available at many pharmacies. Follow the instructions on the meter and take note of your readings.

A normal fasting blood sugar level is less than 100 mg/dL.

Blood Pressure Test

High blood pressure, or hypertension, is a common condition that can cause heart disease, stroke, and other complications. You can test your blood pressure using a digital blood pressure monitor, which can be purchased at a pharmacy or online.

Place the cuff on your arm, turn on the monitor, and follow the instructions. A healthy blood pressure reading is below 120/80 mm Hg.

Vision Test

A vision test can help detect any vision problems you may have. Start by covering one eye and reading an eye chart from a distance. Repeat with the other eye. If you have difficulty reading the chart, it may be time to schedule an eye exam.

Hearing Test

As we age, our hearing can deteriorate. You can perform a simple hearing test by listening to a series of tones at different frequencies and volumes. If you struggle to hear certain tones, it’s a good idea to see an audiologist for further testing.

Skin Examination

Checking your skin for any abnormalities can help detect skin cancer early on. Look for any moles, freckles, or other marks that have changed in color, shape, or size.

Make sure you also check areas that are not exposed to the sun, such as your scalp, soles of your feet, and genitals.

Breast Exam

Women should regularly perform a breast self-exam to check for any lumps or abnormalities. Start by lying down and placing a pillow under your right shoulder. Use your left hand to feel your right breast, checking for any lumps or unusual thickening.

Repeat on the other side.

Testicular Exam

Men should perform a testicular self-exam monthly to check for any lumps or abnormalities. Start by holding the scrotum in the palm of your hand and gently feeling for any hard lumps or swelling. Repeat on the other testicle.

Contact your doctor if you notice any changes.

Mental Health Check

Mental health is just as important as physical health. Check in with yourself and assess how you are feeling mentally. Are you anxious? Depressed? Stressed? If you’re struggling, it’s important to seek help from a mental health professional.

Oral Health Check

Oral health is a crucial aspect of overall health. Check for any redness or swelling in your gums, sore spots in your mouth, or changes in your teeth. Book an appointment with your dentist if you notice any issues.

These quick health tests can help give you a general idea of your health status. If you have any concerns or notice any abnormalities, it’s always best to consult with a medical professional.

Taking action now can prevent more serious issues down the line.
