Reaching the 20th week of pregnancy is a significant milestone for pregnant women as it marks the halfway point of a typical 40-week gestational period.
By this stage, most women have gotten over the initial challenges of the first trimester and are well into their second trimester. At this stage, their body undergoes some significant changes, which we will discuss below.
1. Growing belly
By the 20th week, most women will have gained a little over 10 pounds and their belly will be visibly big. Their uterus will now be about the size of a cantaloupe.
This growing belly may cause some discomfort and require expectant mothers to buy maternity clothes to accommodate this change.
2. Fetal movements
Around the 20th week of pregnancy, mothers will start feeling their baby’s movements, also known as quickening.
These kicks and movements may be thrilling and an affirmation of progress, but may also cause some anxiety when mothers don’t feel them right away. If mothers do not feel any movement, they should consult with their doctors to ensure the baby is okay.
3. Stretch marks
Stretch marks are another common occurrence during this stage of pregnancy, as the skin on the belly stretches to accommodate the growing baby. Pregnant women may also experience stretch marks on other parts of the body, such as hips and breasts.
Applying a moisturizer on the skin can help prevent or minimize the appearance of stretch marks.
4. Backaches
By the 20th week of pregnancy, the expectant mother’s center of gravity has shifted forward, leading to a strain on the lower back. This shift can lead to frequent backaches that may make sleeping and other activities uncomfortable.
Exercises and warm compresses may be useful in alleviating the pain.
5. Varicose veins
Varicose veins are another common issue during pregnancy. They occur when the blood vessels that return blood from the legs to the heart become swollen and twisted. These swollen veins might be uncomfortable and may require extra support hose for relief.
6. Mood swings
Pregnancy can trigger mood swings due to hormonal changes and the stress of coping with a changing body. Expectant mothers may find themselves experiencing intense emotions one moment and feeling elated the next.
They may also experience exhaustion and overwhelming anxiety, which may improve with using relaxation techniques, exercise, and counseling if needed.
7. Fatigue
The second trimester often brings the relief of morning sickness, but expectant mothers may still feel tired due to carrying the extra weight around, hormonal changes, and the strain of running a household or work.
Getting enough rest, eating a healthy diet, and staying hydrated can help combat fatigue.
8. Increased appetite
Most expectant mothers experience an increased appetite during the 20th week of pregnancy and the second trimester in general. They may crave certain foods and feel the need to eat more than their usual portions.
They must ensure they eat healthily and include plenty of fresh vegetables and fruits in their diet to maintain a balanced diet.
9. Flatulence
Pregnancy hormones can lead to constipation and bloating, leading to flatulence. Pregnant women may find this condition embarrassing and uncomfortable.
They may alleviate flatulence by eating smaller meals throughout the day, avoiding gas-producing foods, and getting regular exercise.
10. Heartburn
As the fetus grows, the uterus will push against the stomach, causing acid reflux and heartburn. Pregnant women may feel a burning sensation in the chest area, especially after a meal.
Eating small, frequent meals, avoiding spicy or acidic foods, and eating slowly may help alleviate these symptoms.
