Anxiety is a common mental health problem that affects millions of young people around the world. It can manifest in different ways, including panic attacks, social anxiety, and obsessive-compulsive disorders.
Despite its prevalence, anxiety is often regarded as a taboo topic, one that people are hesitant to discuss openly. But when one high school student decided to document her experience with anxiety, she hoped to start a dialogue about this serious issue. In this article, we take a closer look at her story, as captured in eight raw photos.
The Beginning of the Journey
The young girl’s journey with anxiety began in her sophomore year of high school. She started experiencing panic attacks, which would leave her feeling overwhelmed, breathless and lightheaded.
She became afraid to leave the house and avoided social events.
When she first started feeling anxious, she didn’t understand what was happening to her. It wasn’t until after she was diagnosed with anxiety that she began to understand her condition.
She started seeing a therapist who helped her identify triggers for her anxiety, and techniques to manage it. She also started taking medication to help regulate her anxiety.

The Fear of Social Situations
One of the most difficult things for the young girl was facing social situations. Her anxiety made her feel self-conscious and paranoid in public, and she found it difficult to participate in group activities.
Her social anxiety left her feeling isolated and alone, which only reinforced her feelings of hopelessness and helplessness.

Despite her fear of social situations, the young girl continued to attend school. She found it helpful to stick to a routine and create a schedule that allowed her to manage her anxiety.
Her therapist also helped her develop coping techniques to deal with anxiety in public places. Although it was a struggle, the young girl slowly began to build her confidence and address her social anxiety.
The Loneliness of Anxiety
Perhaps one of the most difficult aspects of anxiety is the sense of loneliness that it can create. The young girl experienced this firsthand.
Her anxiety sometimes left her feeling like nobody cared about her struggles or understood what she was going through. Her sense of isolation made her feel like she was the only person in the world with anxiety.
Eventually, the young girl discovered that she was not alone. She attended support groups, connected with people online, and read about other people’s experiences with anxiety. This helped her realize that her feelings were not unique.
It was a turning point in her journey, and it helped her feel more empowered to deal with her anxiety head-on.

Battling Obsessive Thoughts
The young girl’s anxiety also manifested in obsessive thinking. She would worry about things that hadn’t happened yet and would replay events in her head over and over again.
Her obsessive thoughts made it difficult for her to focus on anything else.
The young girl’s therapist helped her develop techniques to manage her obsessive thinking. She learned to recognize when she was getting caught up in negative thoughts and to redirect her attention.
Although it was a work in progress, the young girl eventually found that she was able to control her thoughts better with practice and persistence.

The Benefits of Therapy
For the young girl, therapy was a lifeline. It offered her a space to talk about her struggles and to work through her emotions. Her therapist offered guidance and support, and helped her understand her anxiety.
Therapy also helped her discover coping mechanisms for her anxiety which she still uses even now.
The young girl encourages others to seek therapy as well. “Therapy can be scary at first, but it is incredibly helpful,” she says.
“Talking to a professional can help you make sense of your feelings and can offer you new tools for managing them.”.

Breaking the Stigma
By sharing her raw photos, the young girl hopes to break the stigma surrounding anxiety. She wants people to see that they are not alone in their struggles, and to encourage others to seek help if they are experiencing anxiety.
She also wants to challenge the perception that anxiety is a weakness or something that should be kept hidden.
“Anxiety is more common than people think,” she says. “It’s okay to admit that you need help, and it’s okay to ask for it. You don’t have to go through this alone.”.

The Journey Continues
Anxiety is a journey, one that is often full of ups and downs. The young girl still experiences anxiety from time to time, but she feels more equipped to handle it now.
She continues to use the tools that she learned in therapy to manage her anxiety, and she is grateful for the support of her family, her friends, and her therapist.
Looking back on her journey, the young girl sees that her experience with anxiety has made her a stronger person. “I’ve learned that it’s okay to be vulnerable and to ask for help,” she says.
“It’s okay to struggle, but it’s important to keep moving forward.”.

A Message of Hope
The young girl’s story is a powerful reminder that anxiety is a common problem, and that there is hope for those who are struggling.
By speaking out about her experience and sharing her raw photos, she hopes to inspire others to seek help, and to reduce the stigma surrounding anxiety.
“Anxiety can be scary,” she says. “But it’s important to remember that you are not alone. There are people who understand what you are going through and who are here to help. Please, don’t be afraid to ask for help.”.
