My name is Zeta Makripoulia, and I would like to share with you my journey through 7 years of treatment for a chronic illness I have been struggling with for years.
It has been an enormous challenge, but I hope that sharing my experience will help those going through similar circumstances feel less alone and inspire them to keep fighting.
My Diagnosis
When I was 20 years old, I was diagnosed with an autoimmune condition. It was a huge shock and a surprise, as I had always been a healthy and active young woman. I was studying at university and had a busy social life.
I couldn’t believe that my body had turned against me, and that I had a chronic illness.
Starting Treatment
The first months after my diagnosis were difficult. I had to undergo several tests to fully understand my condition, and then I was prescribed medication to manage my symptoms.
It was a lot to take in, but I tried to stay positive and focus on the future.
The Power of Positivity
I believe that having a positive attitude is critical when dealing with chronic illness.
It can be challenging to maintain positivity when you are dealing with pain and ongoing medical treatment, but I found that leaning on my family and friends for support was key. They helped me to stay hopeful and happy and to see the light at the end of the tunnel.
Learning to Manage my Illness
As time passed, I began to learn how to manage my symptoms and navigate my illness. This meant making significant lifestyle changes: I had to eat differently, exercise differently, and manage my stress levels.
I found that meditation, yoga, and finding hobbies that I loved helped me to stay centered and calm.
Surprises Along the Way
Living with a chronic illness is never straightforward, and I encountered many surprises and setbacks along the way. There were times when my medication stopped working, or when I felt that my illness was getting worse.
I had to adjust my treatment, and even switch doctors, to find the right approach. This was a difficult and stressful time, but I persevered.
Support from Others
Throughout my journey, I was fortunate to have a loving and supportive partner. He was my rock, and he helped me to stay positive and to see the good in every situation.
I also had a wonderful medical team who worked tirelessly to help me manage my condition. I cannot overstate how important it is to have people in your life who support you unconditionally.
The Importance of Mental Health
In the process of learning how to manage my illness, I realized how critical it is to prioritize my mental health. I struggled with depression and anxiety, and I found that talking to a therapist was incredibly helpful.
They helped me to process my emotions and to develop coping strategies that worked for me. I urge anyone going through a chronic illness to consider seeking out mental health support as well.
The Beauty in the Struggle
Looking back on my experience, I can see that the years I spent in treatment were difficult but also beautiful in their own way.
I learned to be kinder to myself and to others, to stay present in the moment, and to hold onto hope even when things felt bleak. Now that my illness is more manageable, I feel grateful for the lessons it has taught me and for the person it has helped me become.
Conclusion
Living with a chronic illness is a challenging experience, but it is one that has made me stronger.
I would encourage anyone going through something similar to remain hopeful, to reach out for help, and to remember that there is light at the end of the tunnel. With a positive mindset and a supportive network, you can overcome any obstacle that comes your way.
