New research suggests meditation may be harmful to mental well-being

A recent study has cautioned that meditation may not be suitable for everyone and may even cause harm in some cases. Learn about the study and how to practice meditation safely

Over the past few years, there has been a growing interest in mindfulness meditation as a way to improve mental health. Many studies have shown the benefits of meditation for reducing stress, anxiety, and depression.

However, a recent study has cautioned that meditation may not be suitable for everyone and may even cause harm in some cases.

The Study

The study, which was published in The Lancet Psychiatry, analyzed 83 participants who had a history of depression or anxiety.

Half of the participants were assigned to a three-month meditation program, while the other half did not participate in any meditation. The study found that those who meditated had a higher rate of negative experiences, including depression, anxiety, and feelings of detachment, than those who did not meditate.

The researchers believe that meditation can sometimes have negative effects because it involves confronting difficult emotions and thoughts, which can be overwhelming for some people.

The study also found that people who had previously experienced trauma or abuse were more likely to have negative experiences while meditating.

Not All Meditation is the Same

It’s important to note that not all forms of meditation are the same. The meditation program in the study involved mindfulness meditation, which is a specific type of meditation that focuses on non-judgmental awareness of the present moment.

Other forms of meditation, such as loving-kindness meditation, may not have the same negative effects.

Who Should Avoid Meditation?

While meditation can be beneficial for many people, it may not be suitable for everyone. People with a history of depression or anxiety may want to avoid mindfulness meditation or try a different form of meditation.

People who have experienced trauma or abuse should also be cautious when practicing mindfulness meditation.

It’s also important to note that meditation should never be used as a substitute for professional mental health treatment.

If you are experiencing mental health issues, it’s important to seek the help of a qualified mental health professional.

How to Practice Meditation Safely

If you want to try meditation, there are ways to practice it safely. Here are some tips:.

  • Start with a guided meditation. This can help you learn the technique and avoid any negative experiences.
  • Choose your meditation style carefully. If you have a history of depression or anxiety, avoid mindfulness meditation and try a different form of meditation, such as loving-kindness meditation.
  • Always practice with an experienced teacher. A qualified meditation teacher can guide you through the process and help you avoid any negative experiences.
  • Never use meditation as a substitute for professional mental health treatment.

The Bottom Line

While meditation can be beneficial for many people, it may not be suitable for everyone. People with a history of depression or anxiety may want to avoid mindfulness meditation or try a different form of meditation.

People who have experienced trauma or abuse should also be cautious when practicing mindfulness meditation. It’s important to practice meditation safely by starting with guided meditation, choosing the right style, and practicing with an experienced teacher.
