Notes on my journey with depression

In this article, I will be sharing my personal journey with depression and how it has impacted my life

Depression is a condition that affects millions of people around the world. It is a mental illness that can have a profound impact on an individual’s life, affecting their work, relationships, and overall well-being.

In this article, I will be sharing my personal journey with depression and how it has impacted my life.

Early Signs of Depression

Looking back, I think my struggles with depression began in my teenage years. I was always the shy and introverted type, but I started feeling increasingly sad and hopeless as I entered my early twenties.

It was a feeling that wouldn’t go away, no matter how hard I tried to shake it off.

It was around this time that I noticed some other telltale signs of depression. I had trouble sleeping at night, and when I did manage to sleep, I woke up feeling exhausted.

I lost interest in the things that used to bring me joy, like reading and spending time with friends. I also started feeling anxious and agitated for no reason.

Getting Help

After struggling with these issues for a while, I realized that it was time to seek professional help. I saw a therapist who diagnosed me with depression and started me on a course of treatment that included therapy and medication.

Over time, I started to see some improvement in my mood and overall outlook. I learned new coping mechanisms and strategies for dealing with my depression, which helped me get through tough times.

The Impact on Relationships

One of the hardest aspects of dealing with depression has been its impact on my relationships. It is hard to explain to others what it feels like to be in a persistent state of sadness and hopelessness.

I sometimes isolate myself from others, which can be especially difficult for those who care about me.

It can also be hard to keep up with the demands of work and social life when dealing with depression. There are times when I simply don’t have the energy or motivation to do the things I need to do.

This can cause friction and strain in relationships, especially with those who don’t understand what it’s like to have depression.

Dealing with Stigma

Even though depression is a widespread and serious condition, there is still a stigma attached to it. Many people don’t understand what it is like to have depression, and they may judge those who struggle with it.

I have encountered this stigma in my own life. Some people have told me that I just need to “get over it” or “snap out of it.” Others have told me that I am weak for having depression.

It can be hard to deal with these kinds of attitudes, especially when you are already struggling with a difficult condition.

Daily Struggles

Even though I have been on a treatment plan for several years now, there are still times when my depression feels overwhelming. It can be a daily struggle to get out of bed, go to work, and take care of myself.

I sometimes have intrusive thoughts that make it hard to focus or accomplish anything meaningful.

One thing that has helped me is to practice self-care. I have learned that I need to prioritize my physical and emotional well-being, even when it feels like everything else is falling apart.

This means taking breaks when I need them, going for walks to clear my head, and making time for the things that make me happy.

Conclusion

Depression is a complex and challenging condition that can have a profound impact on an individual’s life. It is essential to seek professional help if you suspect that you are struggling with depression.

Remember that there is no shame in seeking help and that there are treatments available that can help you lead a happier and more fulfilling life.
