The modern man: a paradox of desires

Over the years, the idea of masculinity has gone through numerous changes. With the progressive nature of modern society, the definition of what it means to be a man is no longer the same.

Men are expected to carry out different roles at different times, whether as a father, husband, breadwinner, or even a friend.

It has turned the idea of masculinity into a paradox of desires as they are expected to demonstrate their competence in various ways which could sometimes lead to confusion or conflicting decisions between roles.

In this article, we will be exploring the complex phase that modern men are going through and how they try to navigate several competing demands in life.

The Physique Paradox

In recent decades, we have seen an increasing emphasis on physical health and fitness, which has become the norm in modern society.

The ideal body image of a man is the epitome of this change, with abs, muscular biceps, and a lean frame being the new standard.

This pressure to conform to beauty standards has not only led to low self-esteem for some men but has also resulted in several health complications, such as steroid abuse, eating disorders and body dysmorphia.

However, the modern man is also torn between embracing this new standard of the perfect physique and having to deal with their responsibilities as providers and caregivers.

Juggling between hitting the gym and meeting up with deadlines at work, attending meetings with clients, and taking care of the kids can be exhausting.

The Emotional Paradox

Men have been taught by society that showing emotions is a sign of weakness, and as such, men are often advised to “Man Up” and not show their feelings.

However, this societal stereotype is slowly fading away with more men speaking up about their mental health, emotional struggles, and challenging the idea of what it means to be masculine.

The modern man is trying to find a balance between suppressing their emotions and developing healthy emotional awareness.

They have to balance their emotional intelligence with all of society’s expectations of them, such as being tough, being assertive, in control and never showing any signs of weakness.

Work-Life Paradox

The modern man is also juggling between work and personal life, trying to emerge successful in both aspects.

Achieving this balance has become more challenging with increased work hours, insecurity in the job market, and the pressure to be successful to meet the financial responsibilities of providing for the family.

This has resulted in some men working longer hours, sometimes at the expense of their personal time. Failure to achieve this delicate balance can lead to mental health issues such as burnout, stress, and anxiety.

According to a recent study by the American Psychological Association, men often do not prioritize their emotional and mental health, which can adversely affect their lives in the long run.

Therefore, finding balance is not only challenging but could often lead to a trade-off between work and personal life.

The Social Paradox

Men are typically expected to be independent, self-reliant, and confident in their interactions with others. Being a social outcast or being unable to fit into social norms isn’t a desirable trait.

In recent years, men have been struggling to make adequate connections with others, which have affected their mental health and overall well-being.

This is particularly significant in young men, with more than half of men aged between 18 and 24 struggling with loneliness.

However, the modern man is also expected to navigate the social landscape carefully, trying to fit into specific societal expectations and stereotypes, such as not showing emotions or vulnerability and exuding confidence, leading to conflicting choices of trying to connect emotionally while maintaining composure.

Conclusion

It is clear that the modern man is trying to balance different aspects of life, from physique to emotions, work, and social life, in a world that often presents them with conflicting options and expectations.

It is essential to acknowledge, appreciate and celebrate the complexity of masculinity, enabling individuals to embrace their feelings, struggles, strengths and vulnerabilities.

Men need to be more transparent about their emotional wellbeing and need for support from others.

Breaking the stereotypes and societal norms of what a man should look and act like is vital in paving the way for a better and more diverse future where men can be their true selves, embrace vulnerability, and attain full mental and emotional health.
