  • 1/4 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 cup strawberry jam (or any other jam of your choice)
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, sift together flour, sugar, and baking powder.
  3. Add softened butter and egg yolk to the flour mixture and mix until a dough forms.
  4. Add milk as needed, one tablespoon at a time, until dough is workable but not sticky.
  5. Divide the dough into two equal parts and roll each half into a 1/4 inch thick round shape.
  6. Spread 1/2 cup of strawberry jam on one round of pastry, leaving a 1/4 inch border around the edges.
  7. Place the second pastry round on top of the jam-covered pastry. Use a fork to press down the edges and seal the two pastries.
  8. Using a sharp knife, cut the pastry into diamond or square shapes.
  9. Brush the pastries with beaten egg for egg wash and bake them in the oven for 20 to 25 minutes or until lightly golden.
  10. Remove pastries from the oven and let cool for 5 minutes before serving.

Tips:

  • Keep the dough cold by placing it in the fridge for a few minutes before rolling out.
  • Use good quality jam that is not too watery to ensure a perfect consistency and flavor.
  • Use a sharp knife to cut the paste flora shapes so that they do not break apart in the oven.
  • Do not overbake the pastries, as this may dry them out. They should be light golden in color.
