Ranking the pesticide levels of common grocery items

Discover the top 10 grocery items with the highest pesticide levels, including strawberries, spinach, kale, and more. Learn about the importance of buying organic and how to minimize pesticide exposure

When it comes to buying groceries, one of the top concerns for many consumers is the presence of pesticides. Pesticides are chemicals used to kill pests, such as insects or weeds, during the production of crops.

While they are designed to protect our food from pests, the residues left behind on the produce can pose potential risks to our health.

Organizations like the Environmental Working Group (EWG) analyze government data to determine which fruits and vegetables contain the highest levels of pesticide residues.

These rankings help consumers make informed decisions about which items to buy organic or to prioritize in their shopping lists.

1. Strawberries

Strawberries have topped the EWG’s annual “Dirty Dozen” list for several years. This means that they consistently have the highest pesticide residue levels among commonly consumed produce.

Over 90% of strawberry samples tested positive for pesticide residues, with some even showing residues from at least 22 different pesticides.

2. Spinach

Spinach is another leafy green vegetable that often contains high pesticide levels. Samples of conventionally grown spinach have been found to contain residues from up to 18 different pesticides.

This makes it an item many consumers choose to buy organic, especially if using it in salads or smoothies, where it is consumed raw.

3. Kale

Kale, like spinach, is a popular leafy green vegetable that is commonly consumed in salads, smoothies, or cooked dishes. Unfortunately, it is also known to harbor pesticide residues.

According to the EWG, kale samples showed residues from pesticides that may negatively affect the nervous system.

4. Nectarines

Nectarines, a delicious and juicy fruit, are also high on the list of produce with significant pesticide residues.

Conventionally grown nectarines can contain residues from up to 33 different pesticides, making it important to consider buying organic when possible.

5. Apples

Apples are a staple in many households, but they often contain pesticide residues. The EWG found that conventionally grown apples can have residues from up to 4 to 5 different pesticides.

To minimize exposure, consider buying organic apples or washing them thoroughly before eating.

6. Grapes

Grapes, both the ones we eat fresh and those used for making wine, can have relatively high levels of pesticide residues. The EWG’s analysis found residues from over 40 different pesticides on grape samples.

Washing grapes thoroughly under running water can help reduce some pesticide residues, but it may not eliminate them entirely.

7. Peaches

Peaches are delicious fruits that unfortunately also tend to have high pesticide levels. Conventionally grown peaches may contain residues from up to 60 different pesticides.

To minimize exposure, consider choosing organic peaches or washing thoroughly before consuming.

8. Cherries

Cherries, both sweet and tart varieties, are known for their susceptibility to pests. This means that conventionally grown cherries often require significant pesticide use.

Residues from up to 20 different pesticides have been found on both sweet and tart cherries, making organic options a safer choice for those concerned about pesticides.

9. Pears

Pears are another commonly consumed fruit that can have pesticide residues. Conventionally grown pears have been found to contain residues from up to 25 different pesticides.

Opting for organic pears, especially when consuming the skin, can help reduce exposure to these residues.

10. Tomatoes

Tomatoes, both conventional and cherry varieties, have been found to contain pesticide residues. Samples of conventionally grown tomatoes have shown residues from up to 15 different pesticides.

As tomatoes are often consumed raw or with minimal cooking, considering organic options can be beneficial.

While this list highlights the top 10 grocery items with the highest pesticide levels, it’s important to note that the EWG’s “Dirty Dozen” list goes beyond these items and includes other produce such as bell peppers, potatoes, and imported grapes. If you want to further reduce pesticide exposure, consider purchasing these items organically as well.

By understanding which grocery items are more likely to contain pesticide residues, consumers can make more informed choices when shopping.

Opting for organic versions or thorough washing of conventionally grown produce can help minimize exposure to these potentially harmful chemicals.
