: Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon active dry yeast
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

: Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, mix together the flour, sugar, yeast and baking powder until well combined.
  2. Add the warm water, vegetable oil and milk to the mixing bowl and stir until the dough comes together.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes, until it becomes smooth and elastic.
  4. Shape the dough into a ball and place it in a lightly oiled bowl. Cover with a damp cloth and let it rest for 1 hour to rise.
  5. Punch the dough down and divide it into 12-15 equal parts. Roll each part into a ball and flatten it with a rolling pin until it’s about 1/4 inch thick.
  6. Place a spoonful of your desired filling into the center of each flattened dough round. Gather the edges together and pinch them tightly to seal the bun.
  7. Arrange the filled buns on a lightly oiled steamer basket, spacing them apart to allow room for rising. Cover the steamer basket with a lid and let it rest for another 30 minutes to rise.
  8. Steam the buns over high heat for about 10-15 minutes until they become puffed and cooked through.
  9. Remove the steamer basket from the heat and allow it to cool for a few minutes before removing the buns.
  10. Serve the Chinese steamed buns hot and enjoy!
