Americans love their furry friends with all their heart. So much so that a recent study by Rover.com confirms that American pet owners would rather spend time with their pets than their partners.
The study, which surveyed 1,500 adult dog owners found that 54% of the respondents would rather spend Valentine’s Day with their dogs than their significant others, proving that dogs are a priority in most American households.
Dogs bring more joy and less stress
The study conducted by Rover.com and released on February 12, 2020, found that dogs help their owners cope with physical and mental pressure.
93% of people surveyed said their dog has a positive impact on their mental well-being, with 60% claiming that their furry friend helps minimize stress levels.
Over half of the respondents also believed that they have a better relationship with their dogs than they do with their family members or significant others.
Dogs are seen as non-judgemental, loving and with the ability to make their owners laugh or smile which is why they end up receiving more attention and affection than their human counterparts.
Dogs are better listeners
When it comes to listening, dogs are miles better than most humans. 86% of surveyed respondents believed that dogs are more attentive listeners than their significant others.
While humans have their own perspectives and biases that can get in the way of truly and fully listening to your worries, concerns and thoughts, dogs are always there with their undivided attention – a quality that makes humans feel heard, understood and valued, without judgment.
Dogs are always happy to see you
There’s no feeling quite like the warm welcome dogs give to their owners when they come back home. No matter how bad your day was, or how tired you are, your furry friend greets you with a wagging tail and unconditional love.
This quality is something that most people find missing in their relationships with humans, which is why dogs end up being the preferred companions for many.
Dogs are loyal and trustworthy
When it comes to loyalty and trustworthiness, dogs are hard to beat. They will never lie, cheat, or betray your trust, and will always be by your side through thick and thin.
Dogs are not just pets, but true and unwavering companions, who share their owners’ joys and sorrows.
This characteristic is especially appealing to those who value consistency and authenticity in their relationships.
While humans can be fickle and changeable, dogs are always the same, with their love and loyalty shining through every day- a quality that makes them the ideal partner for most Americans.
Dogs are great for your health
Your furry companion is not just mentally beneficial but also physically as well. Dogs need exercise to stay healthy, which in turn, motivates their owners to exercise too.
Whether it’s doing laps around the park or playing a game of catch, your dog’s need for physical activity can help you maintain a healthy lifestyle without feeling too stressed or forced.
Dogs have also been known to lower blood pressure, which reduces the risk of heart disease or stroke. According to the American Heart Association, owning a dog can reduce the likelihood of dying from heart disease by 31%.
Whether it’s the exercise, the company or both, it’s clear that having a dog is beneficial to your physical health.
Dogs make good judgment call when it comes to security
There’s nothing quite like the feeling of safety and security that comes from having your furry friend by your side. Dogs have an innate ability to sense danger or suspicious activity and immediately alert their owners.
This quality makes them great protectors, while also giving their owners a sense of security when they are at home alone.
Dogs can improve social interactions
Dogs are a natural ice-breaker and can help improve social interactions, especially for introverted people. Walking your dog in the park or taking them to obedience classes can help owners meet new people with similar interests.
Furthermore, dogs can teach responsibility and empathy, especially for children, by providing them with an opportunity to take care of and love another living being.
Dogs are good for the soul
Having a dog is an unforgettable experience that brings pure joy, companionship and more love to your life. They help us connect with nature, our community, and ourselves on a deeper level, while also teaching us about unconditional love.
When it comes to love and friendship, it’s difficult to match the bond that humans share with their furry companions.
