Traveling with your pet can be an exciting experience, but it can also be stressful for both your furry friend and you. In order to ensure a safe and comfortable flight, preparation is key.
Whether this is your first time flying with your pet or you are a seasoned traveler, these are some tips and tricks to help you prepare your four-legged pal for air travel.
1. Visit the Vet
Before you take to the skies, it’s important to schedule a visit to the vet. Your furry friend requires a certificate of veterinary inspection (CVI), which needs to be issued within 10 days of travel.
Your vet can also ensure your pet is healthy enough for travel, update their vaccinations and provide you with any necessary medication. Additionally, your vet can provide you with some calming techniques for your pet to help them cope with the stress of travel.
2. Choose the Right Carrier
Choosing the right carrier is crucial in ensuring your pet’s comfort and safety during travel. Make sure the carrier is airline-approved and fits under the seat in front of you.
Your pet’s carrier should be large enough for your pet to stand up, sit, lie down and turn around in. You can acclimatize your pet to the carrier by placing soft blankets and toys inside the carrier and allowing your pet to become comfortable with it weeks before your flight.
3. Do Your Research
Each airline has different policies and rules when it comes to pet travel. Do your research beforehand by contacting the airline directly to confirm their requirements.
Some airlines might require you to book your pet’s travel in advance, while others will allow you to make arrangements on the day of departure. Additionally, some airlines might have breed restrictions and quarantine requirements that you need to be aware of.
4. Acclimatize Your Pet to the Airport Environment
Airports can be overwhelming to both humans and pets alike. To prepare your furry friend for the airport environment, take them on a few car rides beforehand to acclimate them to the motion and sensations associated with travel.
You can also take your pet to the airport a few times before your flight to get them comfortable with the hustle and bustle of crowds and noisy environments.
5. Prepare Your Pet’s Travel Kit
Pack a pet travel kit with everything your pet may need during the flight. Include their favorite toys, a leash, and collar ID tags with your contact information, food and water bowls, and enough food and water for the duration of the flight.
If your pet is on medication, make sure to pack extra medication in case of delays or travel complications. Additionally, bring disposable cleaning supplies to clean up any accidents your pet may have during the flight.
6. Keep Your Pet Calm and Comfortable
During the flight, keep your pet calm and comfortable by providing plenty of attention, petting and calming words. Consider packing a familiar item from home, such as a favorite blanket or toy, to help soothe and comfort your furry friend.
It’s also important to make sure your pet has ample access to clean water throughout the flight.
7. Be Prepared for the Unexpected
Despite all your thorough preparation, travel delays, weather conditions or mechanical problems can occur. Be prepared to adapt to any unexpected situations and ensure you have contingency plans in place.
At the airport, confirm with the airline staff the location of the pet relief area and plan your schedule accordingly.
8. Know What to Do Upon Arrival
When you arrive at your destination, have a plan in place for your pet’s immediate needs. Depending on how far you and your pet have traveled, they may be in need of food, water, and bathroom breaks.
Have the name and address of a local vet on hand, just in case there are any unexpected medical issues.
9. Give Your Pet Time to Reacclimate
After a long flight, your pet will need time to decompress and adjust to their new surroundings. Give your furry friend plenty of time to rest and explore their new environment before bombarding them with too many new experiences all at once.
Take it slow and let your pet acclimate at their own pace.
10. Reward Your Furry Friend
After a successful flight, reward your pet with plenty of extra attention, love, and treats. Take some time to celebrate the accomplishment and the memories you will have created with your pet.
Traveling with your furry friend is no easy feat, but with proper planning and preparation, it can be a fun and rewarding experience for both you and your pet.
