Using a condom during sexual activity is essential for preventing unwanted pregnancies and the spread of sexually transmitted infections (STIs). However, using a condom incorrectly may lead to failure in condom effectiveness.
Here are ten easy steps to ensure you are properly using a condom.
Step 1: Check the Expiry Date
Before using a condom, check the packaging for the expiry date. Do not use a condom that is past the expiry date, as it may be weakened, brittle, or prone to breakage.
Step 2: Open the Packaging Carefully
Open the condom packaging carefully without using sharp objects that may damage the condom. Fingernails, scissors, and teeth should never be used, as they can puncture the condom.
Step 3: Check the Condom for Damage
Check the condom for any damage or holes before use. Look for any tears, rips, or defects in the condom. If the condom is damaged, do not use it and discard it immediately.
Step 4: Place the Condom on Tip of the Penis
Hold the condom at the tip and make sure it is placed correctly facing the right direction. Pinch the tip of the condom to remove any air, and then place it on the tip of the penis. Ensure the condom stays in place while you put it on.
Step 5: Roll the Condom Down the Shaft
While holding the tip of the condom, carefully roll it down to the base of the penis. If there is any difficulty, stop and readjust to prevent the condom from tearing or slipping off.
Step 6: Lubricate the Condom
Add lubrication to the outside of the condom to improve sensation and reduce friction during sex. Water-based lubricants work well with condoms, while oil-based or petroleum jelly should be avoided as they can weaken the latex and cause breakage.
Step 7: During Sex, Check the Condom Regularly
During sex, check the condom regularly to make sure it has not slipped or broken. If the condom has broken, stop immediately and replace it with a new one. If the condom has slipped off, remove it and replace it before resuming sex.
Step 8: After Sex, Hold the Base of the Condom
After sex and ejaculation, hold the base of the condom while withdrawing the penis to prevent it from slipping off and spilling semen. Carefully remove the condom and dispose of it in the trash.
Step 9: Don’t Reuse Condoms
Do not reuse condoms, even if they seem undamaged. Using a condom more than once increases the risk of condom failure and STIs. Always use a new condom for every sexual encounter.
Step 10: Properly Dispose of Condoms
After use, properly dispose of condoms in the trash. Do not flush condoms down the toilet, as they can cause plumbing issues and harm the environment.
