There is something about a spontaneous getaway that just hits different.
It doesn’t matter if you’re going to a new city or just exploring your own backyard; taking the time to indulge in a three-day journey can lead to unforgettable experiences.
Day One: A City Adventure
Our journey begins in the bustling metropolis of New York City. While countless tourists flock to Times Square, we’re going to do something a little different.
We start our day with a visit to The Met, one of the world’s most famous art museums. With over two million pieces of art spanning multiple millennia, The Met is a perfect place to immerse ourselves in history, culture, and creativity.
After spending the morning taking in breathtaking exhibits, our stomachs begin to rumble. In the heart of Manhattan’s East Village, we stumble upon Nom Wah Tea Parlor.
Established in 1920, this dim sum hotspot is the perfect place to satisfy our cravings. From fluffy pork buns to crispy fried dumplings, every bite is a delight.
Our afternoon is spent strolling through Central Park. This sprawling oasis in the middle of Manhattan is a stark contrast to the busy streets we’ve just left behind.
We meander through the twists and turns, stopping at Bethesda Fountain to take in a street performer’s smooth saxophone solo.
As the sun begins to set, we head to Brooklyn. The Williamsburg neighborhood is home to some of New York City’s trendiest bars, restaurants, and shops. We grab a slice at Best Pizza before setting out to explore the vibrant street art scene.
Day Two: A Coastal Escape
It’s day two, and we’re off to discover the beauty of New England’s coastline. We start by driving up to Portland, Maine. The charming harbor town is famous for its lobster, and we can’t wait to try some for ourselves.
Portland is home to a variety of independent seafood shacks and cafes. We opt for Eventide Oyster Co., named the best oyster bar in America by Bon Appetit.
The raw bar is overflowing with fresh catches, and we enjoy a dozen local oysters before devouring a lobster roll and clam chowder. Bellies full, we stroll along the cobblestone streets of the Old Port district, admiring the historic brick buildings and towering lighthouses.
The next stop on our coastal journey is Cape Elizabeth. We make our way to Two Lights State Park, where we set up a picnic on the rocks overlooking the ocean. The crisp sea air is invigorating as we bask in the serenity and beauty of nature.
Our evening is spent in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. This small town is brimming with historic charm and quirky local shops. We have dinner at Moxy, a farm-to-table restaurant that’s become a staple of the town’s food scene.
As we sip our craft cocktails, we reflect on the natural and historic beauty we’ve experienced on our quick escape.
Day Three: A Mountain Expedition
Our journey concludes with a trek up into the mountains of New England. We drive up to Stowe, Vermont, known for its picturesque landscapes and winter ski slopes.
But we’re here for the summer, and we’re excited for a hike through the vibrant foliage of the Green Mountains.
We choose the popular Stowe Pinnacle Trail, a 3.3-mile loop that offers beautiful views of the valley below. The steep climb gets our hearts pumping, but the breathtaking views of the rolling hills covered in green leaves is more than worth it.
At the top, we sit on a boulder overlooking the valley, taking in the peaceful silence of nature.
After the hike, we wander through the quaint downtown Stowe. The idyllic Main Street is filled with boutique shops, galleries, and cafes.
We end our journey with a late lunch at Harrison’s, a farm-to-table restaurant with picturesque garden seating.
The Takeaway
Our three-day journey has taken us through bustling cities, charming towns, striking coastlines, and majestic mountains. We’ve indulged in delicious bites, explored hidden gems, and discovered beauty in unexpected places.
And that’s the beauty of a three-day journey; it’s short enough to make it accessible, but long enough to make it memorable.
With a little planning, some spontaneity, and a willingness to see the world through new eyes, anyone can take a journey like this and uncover hidden gems along the way.
