Instant Relief from the Cold

Find out how to stay warm and comfortable in the cold with these 10 tips for instant relief. Discover the best ways to layer up, eat warm foods, and use hand warmers

When the cold weather hits, it can be tough to stay warm and comfortable. Whether you’re dealing with icy winds, snow and sleet, or just a chill in the air, you need to take action to stay warm and healthy.

1. Layer Up

The first step to staying warm in the cold is to layer up. The more layers you wear, the more insulation you’ll have between your body and the cold.

Start with a base layer made of a material like wool or silk that will wick away sweat and trap body heat. Add a middle layer made of fleece or synthetic insulation to provide more warmth. Finally, top it all off with a waterproof and windproof shell to keep out the elements.

2. Use Hand Warmers

If your hands are constantly cold, invest in some hand warmers. These little packets contain a chemical reaction that generates heat for several hours. Keep them in your pockets or gloves to keep your hands warm and toasty.

3. Eat Warm Foods

When it’s cold outside, nothing feels better than a warm, nourishing meal. Cook up some soups, stews, or chilis to warm yourself from the inside out. Avoid cold foods like salads and sandwiches, as these will only leave you feeling colder.

4. Stay Active

Sitting still in the cold is a surefire way to get chilly. Instead, stay active and keep your blood flowing. Take a brisk walk, go sledding, or build a snowman.

If you’re inside, do some jumping jacks or run in place to get your heart pumping and your body temperature up.

5. Use a Hot Water Bottle

A hot water bottle is an old-fashioned but effective way to stay warm in the cold. Fill a rubber bottle with hot water and place it against your body to generate heat.

You can also place it in your bed before you go to sleep to warm up your sheets and make your bed extra cozy.

6. Wear a Hat

You lose a lot of heat through your head, so wearing a hat is essential in the cold. Choose a hat made of a warm material like wool or fleece to keep your head and ears warm.

If you’re going to be outside for extended periods, consider wearing a balaclava to protect your face and neck from the cold wind.

7. Drink Warm Beverages

Drinking warm beverages like tea or hot cocoa can help warm you up from the inside out. Avoid caffeine and alcohol, as these can actually cause you to lose heat and dehydrate you.

8. Use a Space Heater

If you’re feeling really cold indoors, consider using a space heater to warm up your room. Be sure to follow all safety precautions and keep the heater away from flammable objects and materials.

9. Invest in a Heated Blanket

A heated blanket is a luxurious and effective way to stay warm in the cold. Simply plug it in and snuggle up under the warmth. Be sure to choose a blanket with adjustable temperature controls and automatic shut-off safety features.

10. Take a Warm Shower

If you’re feeling really cold and can’t seem to shake the chill, take a warm shower or bath. This will help raise your body temperature and warm you up from the inside out.

Be sure to dry off thoroughly and bundle up in warm clothes afterward.
