1. Jeanne Calment
France’s Jeanne Calment is the longest-living individual on record, reaching the age of 122 years and 164 days when she passed away on August 4, 1997.
She was born in Arles, France, in 1875 and lived through two world wars, the discovery of penicillin and the first manned flight. Calment smoked for over 100 years and ate a diet rich in olive oil, chocolate and port wine.
2. Sarah Knauss
Sarah Knauss was born in Pennsylvania in 1880 and died in 1999 at the age of 119 years and 97 days. She was recognized as the oldest living person in the world by the Guinness Book of World Records from April 16, 1998, until her death.
Knauss attributed her longevity to a loving family and lots of sleep.
3. Nabi Tajima
Nabi Tajima, a Japanese woman, lived to be 117 years and 260 days old before she died in 2018. She was born on August 4, 1900, and was one of the last known people born in the 19th century. Tajima was married to a farmer and gave birth to nine children.
4. Lucy Hannah
Lucy Hannah was born on July 16, 1875, in Alabama, United States and lived until March 21, 1993. She reached the age of 117 years and 248 days. Hannah was known for her love of fishing and raising rabbits.
5. Marie-Louise Meilleur
Marie-Louise Meilleur was a Canadian woman who lived to be 117 years and 230 days old. She was born on August 29, 1880, and died on April 16, 1998. Meilleur had 10 children and lived on a farm until she was 104 years old.
6. Violet Brown
Violet Brown was born on March 10, 1900, in Jamaica and died on September 15, 2017, at the age of 117 years and 189 days. She was the oldest living person for a short time before passing away. Brown was known for her love of singing and eating fish.
7. Emma Morano
