Everything you need to know before waxing

Are you planning to go for a waxing session? Check these essential tips before going for an appointment to avoid any nasty surprises. Learn the tips for proper skin preparation before waxing

If you are a first-timer with waxing or occasional waxing person, there are essential things you need to know before your next waxing appointment. Doing this will prepare you and avoid any nasty surprises.

Read on to know the things you need to know before waxing.

1. Hair Growth

Before you go in for a waxing session, make sure your hair is at least a quarter of an inch long (at least two weeks of growth). If your hair is too short, the wax won’t hold onto it, and you won’t get the desired results.

On the other hand, if your hair is too long, try trimming it before waxing so that it won’t be so painful.

2. Exfoliate!

Exfoliating is essential before going in for a waxing session as it removes dead skin cells and allows the wax to grip your hairs more effectively.

If you have sensitive skin, opt for a light exfoliation a few days before your appointment instead of the day before. This will reduce any irritation on your skin.

3. Avoid Sun Exposure

Before waxing, if possible, avoid sun exposure at least 24 hours before the appointment. Sunburnt or overexposed skin can increase the chances of burning, blistering, and peeling of the skin.

Also, avoid any tanning lotion or sprays, which can also make your skin more prone to hypersensitivity and overall pain during waxing.

4. Don’t Swim

If possible, do not swim the day of your waxing appointment. The chlorine in the pool water can cause skin irritation and sensitivity.

If you must swim after a waxing appointment, make sure you wear a washable and absorbent fabric such as a soft cotton towel over the waxed area.

5. Wear Comfortable Clothes

Wear comfortable and loose-clothes to your waxing appointment. Tight clothes after waxing can increase the risk of ingrown hairs, skin irritation, redness, and itchiness.

Also, avoid wearing any skinny jeans or leggings on the day of your waxing appointment if the waxing area is your legs or bikini line.

6. Eat Right

Surprisingly, consuming caffeine or alcohol before waxing can stimulate blood flow and contribute to more skin sensitivity. An expert waxer recommends eating a high-fiber meal and drinking plenty of water to reduce bloating and keep you hydrated.

Also, avoid any high-sugar foods or snacks that can spike insulin levels and stimulate more pain and breakouts after waxing.

7. Avoid Certain Medications

Avoid any medication, such as Accutane, Retin-A, Renova, Differin, or other similar medications, at least six months before waxing. These medications can make your skin very thin and make it easier to get burned during a waxing treatment.

You should also avoid any blood-thinning medications, such as ibuprofen, aspirin, and naproxen. Sometimes, medications such as Tylenol (acetaminophen) or topical numbing agents are recommended to reduce pain and to reduce any discomfort during waxing.

Yes! Waxing is no more for ladies only. Male waxing is rapidly growing in popularity- from eyebrows to ears, nostrils, and genital areas. If you plan to wax the pubic area, try trimming the hair before waxing to reduce any discomfort or pain.

Experts suggest taking a pain reliever such as Tylenol an hour before waxing to reduce the pain and discomfort.

9. Choose the Right Waxing Salon

Always choose an experienced esthetician and a reputable waxing salon with a great track record. Research the salon before your appointment and check their services and reviews.

They should use professional-grade wax, fresh waxing supplies, and clean towels. Check also if they use disposable gloves, which is a must to protect you, and the salon should be clean and well ventilated.

10. Waxing Aftercare

After waxing, avoid sunbathing for the next two days and apply sunscreen to reduce the risk of sunburn. You should avoid any spa treatment for at least one day after waxing and avoid any rigorous exercise for the first 24 hours.

If you notice any redness, you can apply aloe vera or a cool compress to soothe the skin.

Conclusion

Waxing can be a great experience if you follow these tips. With proper preparation, you will minimize skin irritations, avoid ingrown hairs, and get a smoother and long-lasting hair-free skin.

Follow these tips to enjoy a smooth and pain-free waxing appointment.
