Here are seven “dangerous” ingredients commonly found in processed foods:.

1. High Fructose Corn Syrup

High fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is a cheap sweetener that is commonly added to processed foods. It’s made from corn starch, which is processed to create glucose, and then enzymes are added to convert some of the glucose into fructose.

The result is a sweetener that is cheaper than sugar, and is found in everything from soda to ketchup to bread.

But the problem with HFCS is that it’s been linked to a number of health problems, including obesity, type 2 diabetes, and heart disease. One study found that rats fed a diet high in HFCS gained more weight than rats fed a diet high in sugar.

2. Artificial Sweeteners

Artificial sweeteners, such as aspartame, saccharin, and sucralose, are often used in diet soda, sugar-free candy, and other low-calorie products.

They’re marketed as a healthier alternative to sugar, but there’s a growing body of research suggesting that they may not be as safe as we once thought.

One study found that artificial sweeteners may disrupt the gut microbiome, which is the collection of bacteria that live in our digestive tract.

Another study found that people who consume diet soda are more likely to develop metabolic syndrome, a group of risk factors that increase the risk of heart disease and diabetes.

3. Trans Fats

Trans fats are a type of unsaturated fat that are commonly found in processed foods, such as fried foods, baked goods, and snack foods. They’re often used because they extend the shelf life of food and give it a desirable texture.

But trans fats are extremely harmful to our health. They increase the risk of heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes by raising LDL cholesterol (the “bad” cholesterol) and lowering HDL cholesterol (the “good” cholesterol).

In fact, trans fats are so harmful that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has banned their use in processed foods.

4. Sodium Nitrite

Sodium nitrite is a preservative that is commonly added to processed meats, such as bacon, ham, and hot dogs. It’s used to give meat a pink color and to prevent the growth of harmful bacteria.

But sodium nitrite is also linked to an increased risk of cancer. When it’s heated, sodium nitrite can combine with other compounds in the meat to form nitrosamines, which are known carcinogens.

5. Monosodium Glutamate (MSG)

Monosodium glutamate (MSG) is a flavor enhancer that is commonly used in Chinese food, canned vegetables, and processed meats. It’s used to enhance the umami (savory) flavor of food.

But there’s a controversy surrounding MSG, with some people reporting allergic reactions and other symptoms after consuming it.

While research is inconclusive, some studies suggest that MSG may overstimulate the nervous system and cause headaches, sweating, and nausea.

6. Artificial Colors

Artificial colors are commonly added to processed foods to make them more visually appealing. They’re found in everything from candy to cereal to macaroni and cheese.

But some of these artificial colors have been linked to hyperactivity in children. In fact, the European Union has banned several artificial colors, and the United States requires warning labels on foods that contain them.

7. BHA and BHT

BHA (butylated hydroxyanisole) and BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene) are preservatives that are commonly added to processed foods to prevent spoilage.

But these preservatives have been linked to cancer and other health problems. Both BHA and BHT are classified by the National Toxicology Program as “reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen.”.
