Coffee has always been associated with various health benefits since time immemorial. From providing an energy boost to helping individuals start their day, many people also drink coffee for its potential anti-cancerous properties.

According to recent studies, drinking coffee could reduce colon cancer risk. The research further supports the claim that the caffeinated drink may have anti-cancerous properties.

The Study

The research was conducted by experts from the University of Southern California and University of Hawaii Cancer Center. It looked at data from the Multiethnic Cohort Study, which included 185,855 participants.

They observed that individuals who drank two to three cups of coffee per day had a 12% reduced risk of colon cancer. Further, the results were more prominent for caffeinated coffee and in individuals who were non-smokers. Additionally, drinking coffee did not show any effect on a person’s risk of rectal cancer.

Anti-cancer properties

The anti-cancerous properties of coffee are said to be due to its polyphenols and antioxidants that prevent the formation of cancerous cells.

Further, it is believed that coffee can heighten the activity of colon muscles, which in turn can increase the rate of bowel movements, reducing the risk of cancer formation. Lastly, coffee contains compounds that prevent inflammation, a potential factor in cancer formation.
