The 4 foods that negatively impact male fertility

Certain food choices can negatively impact a man’s fertility. Below are four foods that men should consider limiting or avoiding to ensure optimal fertility

Male fertility is influenced by various factors that include age, environmental pollutants and lifestyle habits. One of these habits is diet, and certain food choices can negatively impact a man’s fertility.

Below are four foods that men should consider limiting or avoiding to ensure optimal fertility.

1. Red Meat

Recent research indicates that men who consume more than 3.5 servings of red meat per week have a significantly lower sperm count than those who eat less of it.

Researchers suggest that compounds found in the meat may affect the way hormones are metabolized and signal the testicles, which will negatively impact fertility. If you are trying to conceive, limit your consumption of red meat to no more than two servings per week.

2. Soy Products

While soy products like tofu, edamame and soy milk can be a healthy alternative to dairy or meat, consuming too much soy can lower male fertility. The phytoestrogens found in soy products mimic the effects of estrogen in the body.

An imbalance in the levels of estrogen and testosterone can affect sperm production. If you consume soy products, ensure it is limited to no more than two servings per day.

3. Processed Foods

Processed foods like chips, sugary snacks, and ready-made meals contain high levels of sugar, salt and unhealthy fats. A diet high in such unhealthy foods can affect a man’s sperm quality and motility.

When trying to conceive, opt for whole, unprocessed foods that are rich in nutrients to improve fertility. Incorporate fruits, vegetables, lean protein, and whole grains into your diet to increase your chances of successful conception.

4. High-Mercury Fish

Unfortunately, high-mercury fish like swordfish, shark, and marlin can be damaging to male fertility. Exposure to high levels of mercury through the consumption of these types of fish can negatively affect sperm quality and reduce sperm motility.

If you want to enjoy seafood while trying to conceive, consider low-mercury fish such as salmon, cod, and canned light tuna.
