Coughing is a natural process of the body’s respiratory system to remove irritants, infections, and foreign particles from the lungs. It is a protective mechanism that helps to keep airways clear.
But when kids get cough, it can be annoying for both the child and the parents. Fortunately, there are many ways to ease a child’s cough without resorting to over-the-counter cough medicines, which often come with unwanted side effects.
1. Honey
Honey has antibacterial properties and soothes irritated mucous membranes. A spoonful of honey before bed can reduce the cough, especially if it is caused by postnasal drip or a viral infection. Children over 1 year can use honey safely.
However, do not give honey to babies under 1 year as it can cause botulism.
2. Saltwater Gargle
Gargling with salt water can help to ease sore throat and reduce coughing caused by mucus accumulation. Add half a teaspoon of salt to a glass of warm water and let your child gargle and spit it out.
Teaching your child how to gargle will take practice, but it’s worth it for the relief it can provide.
3. Steam
The moist air from a warm bath or shower can help your child breathe easier and loosen mucus in the airways. You can also create steam by placing a bowl of hot water in the room or using a humidifier.
Adding a drop or two of essential oils such as eucalyptus or peppermint can be helpful as well. However, do not use essential oils for babies under 6 months.
4. Vitamin C
Vitamin C is an antioxidant that boosts the immune system and helps to fight off infections.
You can easily find vitamin C supplements or add vitamin C-rich foods to your child’s diet, such as citrus fruits, strawberries, broccoli, and sweet potatoes.
5. Fluids
Drinking plenty of fluids helps to keep the body hydrated and thin mucus in the airways. Water and clear fluids like broth, sports drinks, and fruit juice are good choices.
Avoid giving your child beverages that contain caffeine, such as tea or cola, as they can dehydrate your child.
6. Elevate the Head
Using a pillow to elevate your child’s head can help reduce coughing at night. This can be especially helpful if the cough is caused by postnasal drip or acid reflux.
When your child sleeps horizontally, mucus can pool in the back of the throat and trigger coughing.
7. Chicken Soup
Chicken soup is not only a comfort food but also a natural remedy for cough and cold symptoms. It contains an amino acid called cysteine, which helps to thin mucus in the lungs and reduce inflammation. Moreover, the hot liquid can soothe a sore throat.
However, be careful with the soup’s temperature, and do not give it to your child if he or she has a fever.
8. Rest
Rest is crucial for the body to heal and fight off infections. When your child is coughing, he or she needs more sleep and less physical activity. Make sure your child gets enough rest, and avoid overexertion until the cough goes away.
9. Saline Nasal Drops
Saline nasal drops can help to relieve congestion and dry nasal passages. You can buy saline drops from a pharmacy or make them at home by mixing a quarter-teaspoon of table salt with a cup of warm water.
Use a dropper to place a few drops in each nostril.
10. Probiotics
Probiotics are beneficial bacteria that live in the gut and help to maintain a healthy immune system. Studies have shown that probiotics can reduce the risk of respiratory infections and shorten the duration of cough and cold symptoms.
You can find probiotic supplements or add probiotic-rich foods to your child’s diet, such as yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, and pickles.
