Kissing is a common form of affection and communication that humans engage in. However, it can sometimes lead to the spread of certain illnesses and diseases.
Although the risk of transmission is usually low, it is still important to understand the potential hazards associated with kissing.
Cold Sores (Herpes Simplex Virus-1)
Cold sores, also known as fever blisters, are commonly transmitted through kissing. They are caused by the herpes simplex virus-1 (HSV-1), which usually affects the mouth or lips.
Cold sores can be painful and unsightly, and they can also recur frequently.
Mono (Infectious Mononucleosis)
Also known as the “kissing disease,” mono is a viral infection that can be transmitted through saliva, including from kissing. Mono can cause fatigue, sore throat, fever, and swollen glands.
Hepatitis B and C
Hepatitis B and C are viral infections that can be spread through kissing in certain circumstances. Although it is rare, if an infected person has open sores in their mouth, they can potentially pass on the virus through kissing.
Cytomegalovirus (CMV)
CMV is another viral infection that can be transmitted through saliva, including kissing.
Although most healthy adults do not experience any symptoms from CMV, it can cause serious complications for people with weakened immune systems, as well as for babies who are infected during pregnancy.
Meningitis
Meningitis is a bacterial infection that can be transmitted through close contact, including kissing. Although it is a rare occurrence, it can potentially be deadly. Symptoms of meningitis include headache, fever, and a stiff neck.
Gum Disease (Periodontitis)
Although not technically an infectious disease, gum disease can be transmitted through kissing. Gum disease is caused by the buildup of plaque on the teeth, and can lead to gum inflammation, bleeding, and tooth loss.
Colds and Flu
Colds and flu are viral infections that can be spread through kissing, especially if the person you’re kissing is already sick. Symptoms include coughing, sneezing, congestion, and fever.
Strep Throat
Strep throat is a bacterial infection that can be spread through kissing, as well as through coughing and sneezing. Symptoms include a sore throat, fever, and swollen glands in the neck.
Tuberculosis
Tuberculosis is a bacterial infection that can be spread through close contact, including kissing. Although it is rarely spread through kissing alone, if a person with TB has open sores in their mouth, they can potentially pass on the infection.
Human Papillomavirus (HPV)
Although primarily transmitted through sexual contact, HPV can also be contracted through kissing. HPV is a viral infection that can cause genital warts and increase the risk of certain cancers.
