Cancer is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. While genetics and environmental factors can play a role in the development of cancer, the food we eat can also contribute to an increased risk.
Here are some foods that you should limit or avoid to lower your risk of cancer.
Processed Meats
Processed meats such as bacon, sausage, and lunch meats that are preserved with salt, nitrites or nitrates are known to increase the risk of colorectal cancer. These meats when cooked, form compounds called N-nitroso compounds that are carcinogenic.
Processed meats also contain high amounts of saturated fats and sodium, both of which are linked with an increased risk of cancer. If you can’t resist the occasional bacon or sausage, limit your consumption and instead opt for lean meats like chicken, turkey or fish.
Red Meat
Consuming red meat, such as beef, pork, and lamb, frequently has been linked to a higher risk of colon and rectal cancer. High intake of red meats is linked with a higher risk due to a sugar molecule that is found in red meat called Neu5Gc.
When consumed by humans it causes inflammation that can lead to cancer development. If feeling like eating red meat, try lean cuts of meat and eat smaller portions.
Fried Foods
Fried foods, such as French fries, fried chicken, and doughnuts, contain high levels of trans fats. Trans fats are a type of fat that can contribute to inflammation and an increased risk of cancer.
The process of frying food at high temperatures also creates acrylamide, a cancer-promoting chemical compound. Limit your consumption of fried foods, and try baking or grilling as a healthier alternative.
Sugary Drinks
Sugary drinks, such as soda, sports drinks, and energy drinks, have been linked to a higher risk of various types of cancer. Sugary drinks have a high glycemic index, which causes a spike in blood sugar and can lead to insulin resistance.
They also contribute to weight gain and obesity, which are linked to a higher risk of cancer. Instead of sugary beverages, opt for water, herbal tea or unsweetened drinks.
Alcohol
Alcohol is a risk factor for various types of cancer, including breast, colon, liver, and mouth cancer. The risk of cancer increases with the amount and frequency of alcohol consumption.
Alcohol is broken down into acetaldehyde, which is toxic and can cause DNA damage and cancer development. Limit your alcohol consumption, and consider drinking in moderation to lower your risk of cancer.
Refined Carbohydrates
Refined carbohydrates such as white bread, white rice, and pasta, are quickly broken down into sugar in the body, causing a spike in blood sugar levels. This spike contributes to inflammation and an increased risk of cancer.
Refined carbohydrates also lack important nutrients such as fiber and vitamins. Instead, choose whole-grain options and increase your intake of fruits and vegetables that provide fiber and other important nutrients.
Grilled or Charred Meat
Grilling or charring meat at high temperatures can create chemicals called heterocyclic amines. These chemicals have been linked with an increased risk of cancer.
When the fat drips onto the grill, it creates smoke containing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, another cancer-causing agent. To lower your risk, avoid overcooking your meat and consider marinating it before grilling to prevent the formation of these chemicals.
Canned Foods
Canned foods are often high in sodium and contain preservatives, such as BPA, which can contribute to an increased risk of cancer.
The lining of many canned foods contains BPA, which is an endocrine disruptor that can interfere with the normal hormonal function of the body. Look for canned foods that are BPA-free or choose fresh or frozen options instead.
Artificial Sweeteners
Artificial sweeteners are commonly found in diet drinks, candies, and other products promoted as sugar-free.
While these sweeteners are low in calories, they can interfere with the normal function of the body’s metabolism and can contribute to an increased risk of cancer. Instead of artificial sweeteners, opt for natural sweeteners like honey, maple syrup, or stevia.
Highly Salted Foods
Foods that are highly salted, such as pickles, pretzels, and preserved meats have been linked to an increased risk of stomach cancer.
High levels of salt can lead to inflammation and damage to the stomach lining, increasing the risk of cancer development. Limit your intake of highly salted foods, and consider using herbs or vinegar as a healthier alternative for adding flavor to your meals.
