People have unique preferences when it comes to food. Some enjoy a plate of Hot Cheetos with milk, others prefer to eat pickles with peanut butter. But then, there are those who take it up a notch and have the most bizarre eating habits.
The ones who combine foods that make no sense, consume dangerous animals or thrive on a diet that would make most people gag. From a woman who eats soap to a man who enjoys paper, here are nine of the most peculiar eaters captured on camera.
The Man who eats Glass
Nathan Hrdlicka has developed a taste for glass since he was a teenager. The 35-year-old from South Dakota has totaled more than 500 pieces of glassware, including wine glasses and light bulbs.
He feels no pain when consuming the sharp pieces or worrying about cutting his insides. “It’s not that big of a deal when you only consume a little bit at a time,” he says. Nathan’s secret in avoiding injury is believed to be his ability to carefully manipulate the objects before swallowing them whole.
The Woman who eats Toilet Paper
Debbie Wingham’s love affair with toilet paper goes back to childhood. The 39-year-old from London has already consumed 8,000 rolls in the last ten years, and despite her family’s concern, she keeps on munching.
She says, “I can’t sit down with a cheese sandwich. It has to be toilet paper.” Debbie rips the paper one square at a time and eats it with her meals and throughout the day.
The Lady who eats Soap
For 25 years, Tempestt Henderson, 27, from Arizona has been addicted to soap. She says, “I was nine years old when I first tasted soap. I wanted to know what it tasted like and just went ahead and did it.
From there, I just started liking it more and more.” Tempestt eats five bars of soap per week, and her ultimate favorite is Dove’s White Soap. Her body has adapted, and she’s never suffered any damage or intestinal problems.
The Person who eats Dirt
Tania Thomas from Mississippi is known as the “Dirt-Eating Lady.” The 50-year-old has been eating mud every day for the last 30 years.
She says the best way to eat mud is when “it’s wet, dark, and made from clay.” Tania describes it as tasting like eggs or grits, with a smooth texture. She consumes up to four tablespoons of mud a day and claims it helps with digestion and appetite suppression.
The Man who eats everything Raw
Derek Nance, 38, from Kentucky, only eats raw meat, raw fruits, and vegetables. He carries a knife with him at all times to prepare his meals. Derek says he has never been sick from his eating habits and that he feels better when he eats everything raw.
Some of his “delicacies” include raw chicken, pork, and even squirrel.
The Man who eats Insects
Peter Gross eventually turned his love for bugs into a career. The 24-year-old from Amsterdam founded a company that sells insects for human consumption. But far before that, Peter has been capturing and eating insects for years.
He says his favorite bugs to eat are waxworms, locusts, and ants. “Eating solves my hunger, and insects are very nutritional with a low ecological footprint,” he adds.
The Women who only eats French Fries
Becky Walker, from London, has been eating only French fries since she was three. The 26-year-old won’t touch anything else, including chicken nuggets or chips, unless it’s potatoes deep-fried in oil.
The doctors say that Becky has endured no health problems, but she needs to take a supplement to keep up with important nutrients, including Vitamin C and Calcium.
The Woman who eats Bricks
Pakistani woman Nasreen Akhtar has been eating bricks since she was nine years old. The 50-year-old has said the taste is “sweet, sour, and hard,” and she has to make sure they’re very dry, or she won’t eat it.
Nasreen says bricks give her strength and are the only things she can eat. Her family members have attempted to wean her off her enormous appetite for the sake of her well-being, but nothing has worked.
The Man who eats Paper
Steven Page from Derby, England, has a passion for paper, so much so that he even gave up a job as a painter and decorator to pursue the habit further.
The 40-year-old offers his alternative diet to his friends and is convinced there are health benefits. He says, “it’s not embarrassing. It tastes good, it cleans your insides out.” Steven’s favorites are newspapers or even books. He chews a single sheet for up to 30 mins before swallowing.
Conclusion
While most of us couldn’t imagine consuming some of these things, these eccentrics thrive off their strange habits.
Though it is unclear why they have acquired these habits, they’ve learned to enjoy the flavors and textures of things that would make most people gag. For them, there’s simply no other way to experience food.
