“Those with sensitive skin or eczema should use lukewarm water and a gentle cleanser no more than every other night, as overwashing can worsen the skin condition,” says Dr. Shainhouse. “Those over 60 may also want to limit face washing to every other day, as they tend to have drier and thinner skin that is more susceptible to damage.”.

Instead of washing your face every day, you can use other products like micellar water, toner, or a cleansing oil to remove impurities and refresh your skin.

“Micellar water or a toner can also be used on a cotton pad to remove makeup and cleanse the skin without the need to wash with water,” suggests Dr. Shainhouse. “Cleansing oils are also a great way to remove makeup and dirt without overstripping or irritating the skin.”.

After sweating or working out

Regardless of your skin type, if you sweat heavily or work out, you should wash your face as soon as possible to remove sweat and oil buildup and prevent clogged pores or breakouts.

“When you exercise or sweat a lot, you should wash your face immediately after to remove sweat, oil, and bacteria from the skin,” advises Dr. Shainhouse. “This is especially important for those who wear tight-fitting helmets or hats, as the pressure, heat, and sweat can cause acne mechanica.”.
