Hepatitis Scare: Potential Outbreaks in the Works

Hepatitis is a liver inflammation caused by a viral infection. While Hepatitis A, B, and C are the most common types, others also exist. Millions of people are affected by these infections every year, and some outbreaks are potentially looming.

Therefore, there is a need for increased awareness and precautions.

Hepatitis A Outbreaks

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), hepatitis A cases have increased since 2016. The cause of this rise is not entirely clear.

However, there could be a connection between the increase in drug abuse and the spread of hepatitis A. Homelessness, incarceration, and travel to destinations where the virus is common are also reported to contribute to the upsurge.

To mitigate the spread of Hepatitis A, vaccines are recommended for travelers, men who engage in same-sex relationship, people who use drugs, and people who work in healthcare.

Hepatitis B Outbreaks

Like Hepatitis A, the CDC has reported an increase in Hepatitis B infections since 2016. Hepatitis B is transmitted through blood, semen, and other body fluids.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), vertical transmission from mother to child is another common mode of transmission. Hepatitis B is preventable through vaccination and following preventive measures such as avoiding sharing needles or injecting drugs. Blood and body fluid contamination should also be avoided.

Hepatitis C Outbreaks

Unlike Hepatitis A and B, Hepatitis C doesn’t have vaccines to prevent it. As such, individuals should seek early diagnosis and treatment. According to the CDC, hepatitis C cases have also risen since 2016.

Drug use, exposure to contaminated blood during medical procedures, and other risk factors contribute to the increase. It is crucial for individuals to utilize safe sex methods, avoid sharing needles, and seeking routine hepatitis C test.

Hepatitis D and E Outbreaks

Hepatitis D and E are rare compared to other hepatitis types. However, WHO has issued a notice on the increase of Hepatitis E cases.

According to the organization, Hepatitis E outbreaks have been reported areas that have suffered natural disasters such as floods and earthquakes. Sanitation and water provision are also factors contributing to the emergence of the virus. More research is needed to come up with a vaccine for Hepatitis E.

Conclusion

Successful hepatitis prevention practices involve risk reduction. Given the increase in Hepatitis cases, it is essential to emphasize effective preventive measures such as vaccinations, avoiding injecting drugs, and safe sex methods.

To reduce the risk of transmission through blood, ensuring that medical equipment is sterilized and clean should be priority. In addition to that, increasing awareness of the dangers of Hepatitis viruses and proper hygienic practices is an effective way to improve overall public health safety.
