The year 2020 was not an easy one for the world. COVID-19, a highly infectious disease, wreaked havoc globally, bringing lives to a standstill. Governments worldwide enforced lockdowns, and citizens had nowhere to go.
In these times of distress, many of us found solace in movies. With people stuck at home, movie-watching became a popular way to pass the time.
Several of us were surprised by the movies we happened to come across. We are here to tell you about some of the movies we adored, the surprises you can’t imagine:.
1. The Platform (2019)
The Platform is a Spanish science-fiction horror movie that starts in a vertical prison where the remaining residents only get to eat for two minutes a day.
This movie is a comment on social classes, and how people at the top of the poverty chain acquire wealth and the disdain that they usually feel for people below. The movie’s plot is not only thrilling but also thought-provoking, and a must-watch for all movie lovers.
2. Da 5 Bloods (2020)
Spike Lee’s Da 5 Bloods was a surprise package of 2020. The movie revolves around Vietnam War veterans who return to the country to find the remains of their fallen squad leader and the treasure they buried decades ago.
The movie sheds light on issues like PTSD and racism but in the end, Lee sheds light on the humanity of Americans, even those who fight wars that might be controversial and unpopular.
3. The Half of It (2020)
The Half of It is a coming-of-age comedy-drama movie directed by Alice Wu. The movie is a modern take on the Cyrano de Bergerac story. Ellie Chu gets hired by a jock, Paul Munsky, to help him write love letters to his crush, Aster Flores.
However, to complicate things, Ellie develops feelings for Aster too. This movie is not on everyone’s radar, but it is a charming love story that is worth the watch.
4. Hamilton (2020)
Based on the life of the American founding father Alexander Hamilton, Hamilton is a musical widely known for its distinct approach to American history. Lin-Manuel Miranda wrote and starred in it.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Hamilton was streamed once again on Disney +. The musical is a perfect marriage of music and history that is thought-provoking, educational, and of course, iconic.
5. The Social Dilemma (2020)
The Social Dilemma is a Netflix documentary on how social media platforms are deliberately designed to keep users hooked. The movie highlights the dangers of social media.
We all know the impact social media has had on our lives, but this documentary presents it in a way that is fresh and insightful. As we spent more time on our phones during the pandemic, this documentary was an eye-opener for many.
6. Palm Springs (2020)
Palm Springs is a romantic comedy movie directed by Max Barbakow. The movie showcases two wedding guests, Nyles and Sarah, who get stuck in a timeloop, where they live the same day again and again.
Both characters are very likable, and their chemistry keeps the movie alive. It’s a movie you can watch on repeat because it is easy to enjoy and soak in.
7. Borat Subsequent Moviefilm (2020)
Borat Subsequent Moviefilm is a mockumentary by Sacha Baron Cohen. The movie follows (fictional) Kazakhstani reporter Borat Sagdiyev as he returns to the U.S. to deliver his daughter as a gift to Vice President Mike Pence.
The movie is fun, hilarious, and a little cringy but sprinkles mild political commentary on top.
8. Sound of Metal (2019)
Sound of Metal is a musical drama movie about a drummer, Ruben, who loses his hearing but must continue to move forward. The movie is riveting, and the sound design is remarkable.
It’s a story about acceptance, charting one’s course, and the pain that comes with it. The movie leaves you grappling with the importance of communication and the human spirit.
9. The Trial of the Chicago 7 (2020)
A legal drama, The Trial of the Chicago 7, directed by Aaron Sorkin, focuses on the 1969 trial of anti-Vietnam War activists.
The film explores themes like freedom of speech and the right to protest, sparking the audience’s interest in the legal system’s workings. The performances in the movie are excellent, with strong performances by Sacha Baron Cohen, Eddie Redmayne, and Mark Rylance.
10. Onward (2020)
An animated movie by Pixar, Onward revolves around two teenage elf brothers, Ian and Barley, who embark on a journey to find the tools to cast a spell that can bring their deceased father back for a day.
The movie balances heartfelt moments with comical undertones, making the film enjoyable for all ages. It’s a beautiful way to remind people about the value of family and small moments.
