When to Expect Your Little One: 7 Signs of Impending Labor

As the due date approaches, it can be difficult to know when to expect labor to begin. While every woman’s labor experience is unique, there are some signs that can indicate that labor is imminent. Here are seven signs to watch for

For women who are pregnant, the anticipation of the arrival of their little one can be overwhelming. As the due date approaches, it can be difficult to know when to expect labor to begin.

While every woman’s labor experience is unique, there are some signs that can indicate that labor is imminent. Here are seven signs to watch for:.

1. Increased vaginal discharge

As your body prepares for labor, you may notice an increase in vaginal discharge. This discharge may be thick and mucus-like, and it may be tinged with blood.

This is known as the “bloody show,” and it is a sign that your cervix is beginning to dilate.

2. Cramping and back pain

As your baby drops lower in your pelvis, you may experience cramping and back pain. This is because your baby’s head is putting pressure on your pelvic floor and lower back muscles.

These pains may be mild at first, but they can become more intense as labor approaches.

3. Braxton Hicks contractions

Braxton Hicks contractions are a normal part of pregnancy, but as labor approaches, they may become more frequent and intense. These contractions are typically felt in the front of the abdomen and may be mistaken for true labor contractions.

One way to tell the difference is to time the contractions. If they are irregular and don’t get closer together, they are probably Braxton Hicks contractions.

4. Increased energy

While many women feel tired and worn out during pregnancy, some experience a burst of energy in the days leading up to labor. This is because the body is preparing for the physical exertion of labor and delivery.

If you suddenly feel like nesting or doing a deep clean of your house, this could be a sign that labor is on the horizon.

5. Diarrhea

In the days and hours leading up to labor, you may experience bouts of diarrhea. This is your body’s way of preparing for labor by emptying your bowels. If you experience diarrhea, be sure to drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated.

6. Water breaking

When your water breaks, it means that the amniotic sac has ruptured and labor is imminent. This may happen as a sudden gush of fluid, or it may be a slow leak. If your water has broken, you should contact your healthcare provider right away.

7. Contractions

True labor contractions are regular and get closer together over time. They are also more intense than Braxton Hicks contractions. You may feel these contractions in your lower back, abdomen, or thighs.

If you experience contractions that are less than five minutes apart and last for at least a minute, it’s time to head to the hospital.

While these signs can indicate that labor is imminent, every woman’s labor experience is different. Some women may not experience any of these signs, while others may experience all of them.

The most important thing is to pay attention to your body and contact your healthcare provider if you are concerned.
