Preventing Kidney Stones: 6 Easy Tips

Men and women of any age can develop kidney stones, but certain factors such as being overweight, dehydrated, having a diet high in sodium or animal protein, and having certain medical conditions such as gout or urinary tract infections can increase your risk.

The good news is that there are simple steps you can take to prevent kidney stones from forming. Here are six easy tips:.

1. Drink plenty of water

Drinking lots of water is one of the most effective ways to prevent kidney stones. Adequate hydration helps flush out the minerals and other substances that can form stones in your kidneys.

Aim to drink at least 8-10 glasses of water a day, or enough so that your urine is pale yellow or clear.

2. Eat a balanced diet

A balanced diet that is rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and low in salt and animal protein can help prevent kidney stones. Foods that are high in oxalates such as spinach, rhubarb, and strawberries, should be eaten in moderation.

3. Watch your sodium intake
