Size and Shape

The typical size of a mature sperm cell measures around 5-6 micrometers in length. The head of the sperm, which contains the genetic material, is usually oval or elliptical-shaped, while the midsection and tail are slender and elongated.

A well-formed shape enables the spermatozoa to efficiently navigate through the female reproductive tract towards the egg.

Motility

Motility refers to the sperm’s ability to move and swim actively. Spermatozoa employ a flagellum, a whip-like tail, for propulsion.

Progressive motility indicates that a large percentage of the sperm are swimming in a straight line and moving forward. Rapid and coordinated movement is crucial for spermatozoa to reach the egg for fertilization.

Count and Concentration

Sperm count refers to the total number of spermatozoa present in a given sample or ejaculate. A healthy sperm count is typically considered to be around 15 million to more than 200 million sperm per milliliter of semen.

Concentration, on the other hand, refers to the number of spermatozoa per milliliter of semen. Adequate count and concentration increase the chances of successful fertilization.

Viability and Vitality

Viability measures the percentage of live sperm cells in a given sample. A higher percentage of viable sperm indicates a greater likelihood of successful fertilization. Vitality, however, assesses the sperm’s overall health and functionality.

Spermatozoa need to have intact membranes and functional mitochondria for energy production to be considered vital.

Morphology

Sperm morphology refers to the size and shape of the sperm components, including the head, midsection, and tail. Assessing sperm morphology helps determine if the sperm cells have proper structures required for fertilization.
