Five Indications of Biliary Stones

Biliary stones, also known as gallstones, are hard deposits that form in the gallbladder or bile ducts. These stones can range in size from tiny as a grain of sand to as large as a golf ball.

If left untreated, biliary stones can lead to serious complications such as inflammation, infection, and blockage of the bile ducts. Therefore, it is important to be aware of the signs and symptoms of biliary stones. Here are five indications of biliary stones:.

1. Abdominal Pain

Abdominal pain is one of the most common symptoms of biliary stones. The pain typically occurs in the upper right quadrant of the abdomen, just under the ribcage. The pain may also radiate to the back or right shoulder blade.

The pain can be sharp or dull and can last for several hours. The pain usually occurs after eating a fatty meal or at night. In some cases, the pain can be severe and can lead to nausea and vomiting.

2. Jaundice

Jaundice is a condition that causes yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes. It occurs when the bile ducts are blocked by gallstones, preventing bile from flowing properly.

The buildup of bilirubin in the bloodstream causes the yellowing of the skin and eyes. Other symptoms of jaundice include dark urine, pale stools, and itching.

3. Nausea and Vomiting

Nausea and vomiting are common symptoms of biliary stones, especially if they are accompanied by abdominal pain. The nausea may be mild or severe and can lead to vomiting.

The vomiting may be accompanied by bile or blood if the bile ducts or gallbladder are inflamed or infected.

4. Fever

Fever is a sign of infection and inflammation. If biliary stones are left untreated, they can lead to infections such as cholecystitis (inflammation of the gallbladder) and cholangitis (inflammation of the bile ducts).

These infections can cause fever, chills, and sweating.

5. Biliary Colic

Biliary colic is a type of abdominal pain that occurs when the gallbladder contracts in an attempt to pass a stone that is blocking the bile ducts. The pain usually begins suddenly and can last for several hours.

Other symptoms of biliary colic include nausea and vomiting.

These are the five indications of biliary stones. If you experience any of these symptoms, it is important to see a doctor as soon as possible. Your doctor may perform tests such as an ultrasound, CT scan, or MRI to diagnose the condition.

Treatment for biliary stones may include medication, surgery, or a combination of both.
